Joseph married Maria ATWATER on 10 Dec 1791 in St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England. Maria was christened on 22 May 1774 in St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England; was buried on 10 May 1819 in St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England.

    Notes:

    Baptised:
From PR data transcribed by KFHS on CD 19
Shows Maria Dau of William & Elizabeth ATWATER

I think the baptism was probably this Maria, although she would only have been aged about 17 when she married.

One of 11 children of William and Elizabeth (assuming there was just one couple with the names), born between 1754 and 1779. They included a John who was probably the John Atwater, a witness when she married.

    Died:
Probably before 1841 as not with her husband in the census of that year.

    Buried:
From KFHS transcribed data on CD 19Probably the Maria buried in Bredgar 10 May 1819, shown as aged 48, abode Bredgar. The age suggests born about 1770 or 1771, probably close enough - I think that most likely was this Maria.
(The only other buried in Bredgar was buried in 1808; with children baptised and almost certainly born after this it is consequently very unlikely that burial was this Maria)

    Notes:

    Married:
From transcribed data on KFHS CD 19
Shows Joseph RAYFIELD Bachelor of  Bicknor married Maria ATWATER Spinster of Bredgar, married by License; Witnesses were S Wood and John Atwater
Probably had several children before 1801, maybe baptised in Bicknor where Joseph was 'of' when they married (I have not checked the PRs there).

    1. Kathleen? RAYFIELD was buried on 4 Dec 1795 in St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England.

  1. 8.  George GOATHAM was born about 1740 in Whitstable, Kent, England; was christened on 29 Apr 1740 in All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England (son of Michael GOATHAM and Elizabeth DUNKIN); died in Mar 1788 in Tonge, Kent, England; was buried on 12 Mar 1788 in St. Giles’ Church, Tonge, Kent, England.

    Other Events:

    • Settlement: Bef 1762, Stone-next-Faversham, Kent, England
    • Poor Law: 4 Feb 1762; Settlement examination

    Notes:

The George who married Ann Winch was "of Bapchild, bach" at time of marriage

(Research):There seem to have been 2 Georges born in Whitstable around 1740 either of whom could be my ancestor George (date of birth unknown, but he married in 1761). There were actually 4 Georges baptised in Whitstable between 1733 and 1741, but 2 appear to have died in infancy.
Thus the 2 Whitstable candidates are:
    1. the younger George, son of Michael and Elizabeth nee Dunkin, grandson of George Goatham and Ame nee Rickson, baptised 1740,
    2. George son of George and Jane nee Stane, grandson of Richard Goatham and Mary nee Cok, baptised 1734.
The 2 candidates shared Goatham great grandparents: George Goatham and Mildred (maiden name unknown)

Of course my ancestor George (this one) could have been another George entirely, but Michael was a fairly unusual name at that time, and both the Whitstable potential fathers of this George named their 1st son Michael - as did George (marr 1761), so I'm pretty confident they must at least be close relations to this George.

It seems more common for a man to name his first son after himself or his father than after a brother or grandfather, etc. so it seems more likely that Michael was the father of this George but this is hardly enough evidence to rule George out as the father.

Twenty seven had been a more typical age to marry, favouring the one baptised in 1734, but the Ann Winch that this George married was almost certainly born about 1742 (from age recorded at burial and the date of the baptism of the only likely Ann); a groom being just a couple of years older than his bride was the average age difference and that favours the one I show here, baptised 1740.

    Birth:
    (assumed from baptism)

    Baptised:
    From KFHS CD22

    Settlement:
    * I am guessing it was this Stone *

    Poor Law:
A settlement examination of George and Anne when they were living in Bapchild in 1762 establised that they were settled in Stone.
From entry in the Lathe of Scray petty sessions records it appears that no copy of the full examination survives.
The examination would have looked at what could have changed George's place of settlement from that inherited from his father - whether he was an apprentice (and completed the apprenticeship), whether he had been employed for at least a year by an employer, etc.. This may well have made it clear which George was the one who married Ann. The petty sessions will have recorded a summary; if we are lucky this may still contain sufficient. E.g. if he did serve an apprenticeship he would have only been likely to have completed this about a year before the examination if the George baptised 1740, but 7 years before if the one baptised in 1734.

    Died:
    (assumed from burial)

    Buried:
There was also a George Goatham bur in Tonge on 5 May 1784; the other burial is almost certainly this George's son. But which is which? Probably no way of knowing.

George married Ann WINCH on 8 Oct 1761 in St. Giles’ Church, Tonge, Kent, England. Ann (daughter of William WYNCH and Susanna GOORD OR FOORD) was born about 1742 in Tonge, Kent, England; was christened on 18 Jul 1742 in St. Giles’ Church, Tonge, Kent, England; died in 1824 in Tonge, Kent, England; was buried on 3 Feb 1824 in St. Giles’ Church, Tonge, Kent, England.

  2. 9.  Ann WINCH was born about 1742 in Tonge, Kent, England; was christened on 18 Jul 1742 in St. Giles’ Church, Tonge, Kent, England (daughter of William WYNCH and Susanna GOORD OR FOORD); died in 1824 in Tonge, Kent, England; was buried on 3 Feb 1824 in St. Giles’ Church, Tonge, Kent, England.

    Notes:

"of Tonge, sp." at time of marriage to George and John

(Research):Most trees show her as the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth née Rogers, of Upchurch. I may be missing something e.g. perhaps there is evidence that the Ann I am claiming died in infancy. However, it seems more likely that one person has made a mistake (because the baptism of Ann in Tonge is not on the internet, whereas the one in Upchurch - the usual poor research of ignoring data not available in 2 seconds), and everyone else has behaved like lemmings.

    Birth:

IGI entry shows age as 82 - I imagine this is from the PR; if so, it ties in with her baptism being in 1742

Is this the William who married in Stockbury?

Not only is Detling very close to Stockbury, but the names of the parents, James and Mary, are the names William in Stockbury gave to his first son and first daughter.
(The only other in the index on FMP as at 19 Jul 2019, including most but not all parishes in the area, is a William Randal baptised in Milton next Sittingbourne in 1726, son of Thomas and Elizabeth; the Detling one seems far more likely. A William Randall had also been baptised in 1731, but to the same parents as the 1734 William, the first having died in infancy).

    Shows William Randall

William married Mary HARBULT on 17 Jan 1757 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England. Mary was born est 1736; and died.

  4. 11.  Mary HARBULT was born est 1736; and died.

    Other Events:

    • Residence: 1757, Marden, Kent, England

    Notes:

    Birth:
Assuming I am right and it was this Mary who married Francis Tombling then she had a child in 1781 so can't have been born much later earlier than 1733, and marrying first in 1757 is unlikely to have been born later than 1739.

    Residence:
At the time of her marriage

    Notes:

    Married:
From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 19 Jul 2019)
Shows William RANDLE Bachelor of Stockbury married Mary HARBULT a maiden by Banns, witnesses were John Wills and William Stiles.
Both bride and groom make their marks, however the name written where Mary made her mark appears to be Mary BANDE! Some of the Bs and Rs are similar, so maybe RANDE, and meant to be RANDLE, her married name. A Banns register only seems to exist from 1759 so can't check the name given as her maiden name there.
(a Wills was witness at a number of weddings around this time, although a John Kerby was at more and so was probably the Parish Clerk but the Wills may have been helping out when he was not available)

    Children:
    1. William RANDALL was christened on 10 Sep 1758 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England; was buried on 1 Dec 1759 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England.
    2. James RANDALL was christened on 7 Sep 1760 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England; and died.
    3. Thomas RANDALL was christened on 25 Mar 1764 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England; and died.
    4. Mary RANDALL was christened on 9 Feb 1766 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England; and died.
    5. 5. Rebecca RANDALL was born about 1767; was christened on 29 Nov 1767 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England; died in Dec 1835 in Bredgar, Kent, England; was buried on 29 Dec 1835 in St. John the Baptist Church, Bredgar, Kent, England.
    6. Elizabeth RANDALL was christened on 17 Dec 1769 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England; and died.
    7. Ann RANDALL was christened on 29 Dec 1771 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England; and died.
    8. George RANDALL was christened on 29 May 1774 in St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stockbury, Kent, England; and died.

Gen.: 5

  1. 16.  Michael GOATHAM was born about 1700 in Herne, Kent, England; was christened on 8 Jan 1699/00 in St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England (son of George GOATHAM and Ame RICKSON); died in Nov 1754 in Whitstable, Kent, England; was buried on 1 Dec 1754 in All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Millstrood Farm, Whitstable, Kent, England; Farmer

    Notes:

(name also recorded as Mickel Or Michal)

    Is this George's father?

I have Michael and his wife as the parents of my ancestor George but I am not certain about this. See research notes on George's page for more about this.

    Churchwarden and Feoffee

This Michael seems the only one the right age to have been the Churchwarden in Whitstable in 1730 when the bells were cast; his name is recorded on the tenor.

Also the only one who could have been a feoffee named on some documents  in the Canterbury Cathedral archives centre, dating from 1731 - 1751. (I hope to see these in time)
The feoffees managed charities for the benefit of the poor of Whitstable; some more information about this can be found on the British History Online website.

    Coleman's Catalogue: deeds

This includes an entry for deeds concerning Michael Goatham in Whitstable Parish in 1725 (vol. 113, item 458, p.20)

James Coleman was an heraldic and genealogical bookseller and publisher in London in the second half of the 19th century. As a second hand dealer he sold marriage settlements, wills, rent rolls, peerage claims, private and local Acts of Parliament, appeal cases, pedigrees, deeds, autograph letters, maps and so on as well as new and second hand books on heraldry, topography and biography.

His catalogues give brief details of the items for sale, and the Society of Genealogists has in its library bound copies of these catalogues. I will look up the entry for Michael and see if there is any additional info., although the information given about a document is often sparse.

    Birth:
    (assumed from baptism)

    Baptised:
    IGI, 30/4/2011, source film  1736835, 1836274 - mother Ame
KFHS transcript (CD 21) - mother's name given as Ann

    Occupation:
    Probably!
In the burial record for Michael's grandson Michael Webb is recorded that the latter drowned in his "Grandfather Michl. Goatham's pond at Millstrood".
From this I imagine that Michael Goatham must have been a farmer. Or might he have been a miller? (we refer to "mill ponds")

If I am right and he was a farmer I imagine the family would have lived at Millstrood Farmhouse, which still survives and is a listed building.
    It can be seen
    in a photo here

    Died:
    (assumed from burial)

    Buried:
The PRs show thes Michael buried as "householder". This is the only Michael I now know of whose burial this could be.

A widow named Elizabeth Goatham remarried in 1756 - this fits too with the widow of this Michael.

Michael married Elizabeth DUNKIN on 14 Feb 1724/25 in St. Vincent’s Church, Littlebourne, Kent, England. Elizabeth was born est 1701; died in Jul 1759 in Whitstable, Kent, England; was buried on 10 Jul 1759 in All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England.

  2. 17.  Elizabeth DUNKIN was born est 1701; died in Jul 1759 in Whitstable, Kent, England; was buried on 10 Jul 1759 in All Saints’ Church, Whitstable, Kent, England.

    Notes:

(Research):Note - there are earlier Dunkens on my tree - married to a Becon
No other earlier Dunk(i/e)n entries in Littlebourne registers (KFHS transcripts).

    Birth:
Estimate (to help with viewing indexes etc.) based on date of marriage and age of husband

    Died:
    (assumed from burial)
After 14 Dec 1754 since there was a grant of admin to Elizabeth on that day (assuming burial in Whtistable on 9 Dec was the Michael Goatham this Elizabeth was married to).

    Buried:
From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 3 Feb 2013):
    Under headings "Lady-day 1759" and "Buried" - "Eliz Wife of Michael Broadstreet - - - } July 10"

Since described as "Wife of Michael Broadstreet" when she died, it implies that her 2nd husband Michael Broadstreet was still alive.

  3. 18.  William WYNCH was born est 1707 in (possibly), Murston, Kent, England; and died.

    Notes:

There are only 2 Winch marriages recorded in St. Michael's Church, Sittingbourne (KFHS transcript, covering 1562 - 1836). One was of a John in 1785 - probably William's son or grandson, the other was a Daniel of Upchurch who got married in 1739. Daniel was a fairly unusual name so I don't think it can be a co-incidence that Wm's son John called his 3rd son Daniel - after he had named his 1st after himself, and his 2nd after his father. My guess is that Daniel was a brother of Williams.

(Research):Viewd BTs for Tonge in Cant Cath archives, on 31 Jan 2005.
Extraced all Winch entries 1705 - 1761, all mentioned here, only burial shown in notes for Wm ba 1749 not shown on the tree.

Viewed Bapchild entries (also in Cant Cath archives, on 31 Jan 2005) - burials 1719 - 1742, marr 1721 - 1742: no Goathams or Winches. Bap 1762 back to early 1700s, mostly readable - no Goathams other than Michael

Murston BTs (viewd in Cant Cath archives, on 31 Jan 2005)
Viewed all entries back from 25 Mar 1742/3 to 1704/5, for Goatham and Winch; only found marr of Wm and Susanna, and a burial 9 Oct 1719 Mary Gothen. From 1734/5 also looked for Goord - found none. Quick look, hard to read, may have missed entries.

    Birth:

From BTs entry (images on microfilm, viewed at the CCA, 31 Jan 2005)
    by banns
The KFHS transcription (from 'original records' - I guess this means PRs rather than BTs) shows William WINCH? of Tonge married Susanna FOORD, otp, by Banns on 11 Feb 1734/5.
(tbc - I could well have got the name wrong, my palaeography skills were very limited then compared with now and the BTs may have been worn or wrong; as for the date - I wasn't used to viewing BTs and that some are 'to' a date the 'following' year; I suspect in this case the KFHS transcription is more likely to be right)

    Children:
    1. John WINCH was born about 1735 in Tonge, Kent, England; was christened on 11 May 1735 in St. Giles’ Church, Tonge, Kent, England; was buried in 1787 in St. Michael’s Church, Sittingbourne, Kent, England.

    3. William WINCH was born about 1749 in Tonge, Kent, England; was christened on 27 Aug 1749 in St. Giles’ Church, Tonge, Kent, England; and died.

  1. 32.  George GOATHAM was born about 1665 in Herne, Kent, England; was christened on 10 Jan 1665/66 in St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England (son of George GOATHAM and Mildred); died in Jan 1730/31 in Herne, Kent, England; was buried on 28 Jan 1730/31 in St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England.

    Notes:

I think this must be the George who entered into a lease of land in Herne in 1706. (Although there were a lot of George Goathams none of those in the Herne area other than this one seem of a suitable age) An earlier document regarding the same land cannot refer to him, as he was then only aged about 2, but probably referred to his father.

I think this must also be the George who was a borsholder (seems to be the only one of a suitable age in the Herne area - there was another on Thanet).
In the Centre for Kentish Studies (in Maidstone) is a copy of an order discharging Thomas Petman as borsholder of the borough of Stread in the hundred of Dengate and appointing George Gotham (CKS-Q/SB 30/121) - I've not yet seen it.

    (Research):Is this my ancestor?
Although appearing as such on my tree, I am not certain, as besides his grandson George Goatham there was another George who could have been the one who married Ann Winch, my ancestors. The other George was the grandson of this George's brother Richard.

    Birth:
    Assumed from baptism.

    Buried:
Probably the George who died in 1730/1 - that burial doesn't seem to fit in with the other Georges.
From PR entry (image on FMP)
"George Gotham __ Buried January 28th"
(many entries on the page show 'son of ...' or 'daughter of ...'; this one doesn't so probably the burial of an adult but can't be sure)

Another was buried 31 Oct 1741 (also in Herne) - several others could have died 1741.
There was also a George buried in Seasalter in 1724

George married Ame RICKSON on 19 Apr 1692 in St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England. Ame (daughter of Michael RICKSON and Dorothy WHITLOCKE) was born about 1663 in Faversham, Kent, England; was christened on 1 Sep 1663 in St. Mary of Charity Church, Faversham, Kent, England; died in Jul 1705 in Herne, Kent, England; was buried on 30 Jul 1705 in St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England.
