Patty REED

-
Name Patty REED Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1747 Walkhampton, Devon, England - (assumed from baptism)
Baptised 29 Mar 1747 Walkhampton Church, Walkhampton, Devon, England - From PR entry (image on FMP):
1747 "March 29 Patty the Daughter of Peter & Ann Reed was baptized"
Gender Female Residence From 1773 to 1798 Sheepstor, Devon, England Residence From 1798 to 1831 Hall Farm, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England - See her husband's occupation notes for why I believe the family were living at Hall Farm (alias Sampford Manor) at this time.
Hall Farm - Sampford Manor
The home of 4 generations of the Spurrell family, c. 1798-1898:
Generation 1: Samuel and Patty and their family, c. 1798-1831
Generation 2: their 3rd son (8th child) Thomas and his family, c. 1841-1868
Generation 3:Thomas's 4th son (5th child) William and his wife Eliza Northmore and their daughter (Eliza being also daughter of Samuel and Patty's grandson Peter, by their dau Ann, and of their granddaughter Mary nee Spurrell, by their son John), c. 1868-1896
Generation 4:Fanny, daughter of…Died 27 Jul 1837 Holetown, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England Cause: Natural decay of constitution - GRO ref: Spurrell, Patty q3 1837 Tavistock RD 9 237While Google maps show 2 separate locations, Hilltown Wood and Holetown Wood, it seems that historically Hilltown / Halltown / Holetown were the same place. Patty's son-in-law James was shown as at Holetown at the time of 1841 tithe apportionment, and he and his family, including Patty's daughter Ann are shown at Halltown in the 1841 census. Either immediately after Samuel's death or when her healthy declined one may assume Patty moved to be looked after in her last years by her daughter.
Death certificate for Patty Reed
Note the number - 7. Registration only started on 1st July 1837, so this was one of the earliest.
The inclusion of the time of death is unusual, and probably due to it being so soon after registration started.
Also, unusually for the certificate of a married woman, it does not name her late husband or give his occupation, merely showing her "widow" under "Rank or Profession".
I only have one other example of this, for another 5 x gt grandmother who died on 21 October 1839 (although a 5 x gt…Buried 30 Jul 1837 St. Mary’s Church, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England Administration 20 Sep 1837 Death duties register entry - Administration was granted to her son Thomas, at Totnes Probate Court. An entry survives in the National Archives in the Death Duty registers. This shows that Patty was assessed as leaving £ 228/1/- on which death duties were 1%. The £ 2-5-7 was paid on 27 Oct 1838.
As well as information about the deceased, the person being granted administration and the death duty, the register includes columns "Persons beneficially entitled", "Consanguinity", "Description" and "To what Share entitled".
Often left blank, in Patty's entry these were filled in. Given that she had at least 5 children still living (3 sons and between 2 and 4 daughters) as well as grandchildren by children who had pre-deceased her it is surprising to see that this shows that her son Thomas was the only person listed and was said to be entitled to the whole. (I would have assumed that all legitimate children or, if dead, their legititmate offspring, were entitled to a share - need to check inheritance laws of that time, but since Thomas wasn't her oldest or youngest living son even "old-fashioned" inheritance laws would not seem to explain this).
The GENUKI page referred to below explains that these registers were never intended to be 'public' records, but rather to be useful notes; I wonder if for that reason the clerk didn't bother to fill these columns in full. It's hard to see that Thomas could have pulled the wool over his siblings eyes and claimed to be entitled to the whole, given that he was the 2nd of the 3 living children.

Banns of marriage 8 Mar 1772, 29 Mar 1772, 19 Apr 1772 St. Leonard’s Church, Sheepstor, Devon, England - PR with combined banns / marriage entry - shows banns unusually (in my experience) being read at 3 weekly intervals - because in this tiny place, which was not then a parish in its own right, there was only a service every 3 weeks.
No info. given as to marital status etc.

Married 22 Apr 1772 St. Leonard’s Church, Sheepstor, Devon, England - The marriage part of the combined banns / marriage entry shows that Samuel and Patty both made their marks, while Alice Reed and Peter Reed Junr. (both appear to be siblings of Patty's) signed. It would seem strange if they could write and Patty couldn't - but Samuel seems to have signed plenty of documents in Sheepstor, so I guess both could write but didn't on this occasion.

Showing where the graves of Samuel and Patty Spurrell and several of their descendants are positioned, in relation both to each other and to the Church.
Some other descendants of theirs, including two, daughters, one being my ancestor Mary, are also buried in this churchyard, but the graves appear to be unmarked.
