    Notes
    • What were Thomas's origins?

Investigating Thomas's origins I thought at first he wasn't baptised in Meavy, although he married there and nothing in the Parish register entry for the marriage indicates that he was of another parish at that time. While Thomas could have moved to Meavy alone to take up an apprenticeship or employment, when youngsters  moved it was often with parents or having left home with a brother or two. And so I thought this was the explanation for a couple of Spurrell entries that weren't for this children: in 1741 the PRs have an entry "Margery Spurrel was buried - Decbr. 17th" - could be Thomas' mother or a sister. And in 1750/1 there is found "John Spurwel of Sheepstor & Elizabeth=Thomas Ridon were married February the 7th" - could he be a brother of Thomas? OK, John wasn't living in Meavy but Sheepstor is a neighbouring Parish, and the villages are less than 1.5 miles apart.
John marrying in 1750/1 would fit well with a John baptised in Shaugh Prior in 1727 (the village is only about 3.5 miles from Meavy village, but another neighbouring parish, so John's family could have lived much closer to Meavy village). And John's parents were William and, yes, Margery.
As well as John, William and Margery had another son baptised in Shaugh Prior in 1730 - Samuel, i.e. he had the name given by Thomas to his eldest son. I have found no further record of this Samuel - maybe he died young; if he was Thomas's brother that could be why Thomas gave a son that name before he named one after himself. (His second he gave his own name, the third was William - after his father?) The only other record I have come across referring to a Margery Spurrell is for a burial in Shaugh Prior in 1768. As with the Meavy burial no age or relationship to others is given. My guess would be that it was a sister of Thomas who was buried in Meavy and his mother in Shaugh. Two burials of William have been found that could be Margery's husband: one in Eggbuckland in 1747 and one in Bickleigh in 1746. While both are isolated occurrences of Spurrells, Bickleigh's close proximity to Shaugh and to Meavy makes it the more likely.
And so I had more or less concluded that Thomas was most probably a son of William and Margery, when I looked again at Meavy and noticed that 4 baptisms were recorded between 1718 and 1724, the children of William and Margery SPURRING.

Did the family make a deliberate change to their name, were they returning to an earlier form, or was this an accidental change, made by one parish priest in one register?
A note in the front of a PR of St. Andrew's Church, Plymouth dated 1653
(see online note of this) shows that at that time a Richard Spurrell was the Mayor. Maybe the change was due to the wish to convince themselves and / or others of a link to a more important family?

Unfortunately the sources I have checked so far have no marriage of either a William Spurrell or William Spurring (or variants of either of these names) to a Margery and the evidence I have so far for links to earlier generations is not only circumstantial but more limited than that suggesting a link between Thomas and William and Margery.
I am also missing the other Margery. It seems likely that William and Margery would chose to name a daughter Margery, but the baptism of one has yet to be found; maybe there were other children that I am also missing.

      Pennycross Spurrells

Looking at the families in and around the Plymouth area in the C17th I think there may be a link with the Pennycross family descended from William Spurrell who married Bridget Dowdall in 1649/50.
Given that we are looking for the grandparents of Thomas (who was probably the son of a William) it seemed worth looking for other Thomases. The online / indexed records only contain 2 baptisms of Thomases in Devon in the C17th: one [Thomas junior] baptised 1699, the son of Thomas [senior] and Catherine (nee Dowdle), and Thomas senior, baptised in 1661, son of William and Bridget (nee Dowdall).
It's possible that William may have been the son of Thomas senior, or else his nephew.

      Charles Church Spurin[g]s

In 1693 the marriage is recorded at Charles Church, Plymouth of a William 'Speering' to Elizabeth Crees. Following this, between 1694 and 1704 eight children of a William and Elizabeth Spurin[g] were baptised. These included a William, baptised 1697, who could have been the one who married Margery. If this William was the son of a William why did he name his first son Thomas and only use his own name, shared with his father, for his second son? - it could be that he named his first son after his older brother, Thomas, baptised 1694.
Could the William Speering / Spurin[g] have been born a Spurrell - could he be the son of the above William and Bridget of Pennycross (baptised 1656)? They used several of the same names for their sons - not unusual names, but possibly unlikely that the same few of quite a number of names in common use at that time should be used first by both families.
      A red herring?

But there was also a William Spearing baptised at Charles Church, son of Richard and Agnes, in 1666 - is he the more likely candidate? Another William, recorded as William Spe[a]ring, had 3 children baptised at Plymouth St Andrews between 1694 and 1701 i.e. the same time the other William was having children baptised at Charles Church. And one of the 3 was named Agnes - I suspect she was named after her grandmother, and that it was this William at St. Andrews who was the son of Richard and Agnes.

      Earlier Meavy Spurrells

Exeter Diocese marriage licenses includes one for Joanna Spurrell to William Hancock, both of "Mevye", 11 Jan 1615/6.

      Other early refs

Dartmoor Press Tavistock info shows that one James Sporwill married a Salome Lapthorne on 15 June 1646
calendar (probate) contains only one entry for a Spurrell and one for a Sporell:
in 1634, Spurwell, Thomas, Harford A[dministration].
in 1648, Sporell, Joan, Whitchurch A[dministration].

Of course our William may not be one of these at all - with earlier res to the odd occurence of Spurrell etc in the Meavy area maybe they were around there all the time - in a parish not transcribed / online?

I have now found a William Spurwill mentioned in the will of Walter Elford
    • (Research):On FMP, as of 17 Jan 2013:
search on Spurrill and also get Spurrell and Spurwell but not Spurwill!!!
For all of the above used SPUR*LL

Also, don't get Sparkwell / Spearkwill etc. using Spurrill OR Spurwill and variants OR the above with a wildcard

      ** Shaugh Prior **
I think it almost certain that the Wm & Margery who had sons John (bapt 1727) and Samuel (bapt 1730) were Thomas' parents and that it was their son John who marr in Meavy in 1750/1, described as "of Sheepstor". ?? Margery the one who was bur in Meavy.

      Sheepstor
A William Spurwill signed the Protestation Oath in Sheepstor
in 1641-2 (so far only seen for those Parishes on the Devon Heritage website)

a Julyan was bur 1576 and in 1584 a Richard had a dau bapt Julyen in 1584 (Plymth St A) - could be the Richard bapt Whitchurch naming a child after his mother, BUT first child of Rich bapt there was 1582 - seems a bit early?
