    • Both the 1841 tithe apportionment and census show John at Church House.
The old Church House, where in earlier days Church Ales etc. would have been held. In later references it appears to be a "poor house" - somewhere to house the poor or (more likely) whose rent would go to support the poor but in 1841 it was owned by the trustees of Humphrey Hall, not by a charity. Perhaps a charity was set up after this date?

At the time of the 1841 census John was living with his wife Elizabeth and children Samuel, Agnes and baby Mary.

(Shown as in a separate house, but Churchhouse seems to be dittoed so maybe it was divided into 2 homes, was a 61 year old Mary Thomas with 22 year old Maria Thomas)

In 1888 it was shown as Church House on a plan when it was presented by the Revd J H Parlby to be the Board School, for which purpose it was extended. It was turned back into private housing in the late C20th.

A grade II listed builiding, more information can be found on the English Heritage website and on the British Listed Buildings website.

    Notes
    • Had a brief flirtation with Methodism? His first 2 children were baptised in the Parish Church in Sampford Spiney, his 3rd, Mary, in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Horrabridge (despite the family living next door to Sampford Spiney Church), then it was back to Sampford Spiney for his 4th. John's brother Andrew had his daughter baptised at Horrabridge Wesleyan Church a few months before the birth of Mary - prehaps that influenced John.
