Name Richard SPURRELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Dec Q 1842 Tavistock, Devon, England - From the 1851 census where shown as aged 8
GRO ref: Spurrell, Richard q4 1842 Tavistock RD 9 474; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Moon
Baptised - Note: siblings whose baptisms have been found were baptised in non-C of E churches, and Richard was described as Wesleyan in his military papers.
Gender Male Education 1851 Tavistock, Devon, England Scholar Military Service From 22 Feb 1859 to 1 Nov 1861 Royal Miners Artillery Militia - When Richard joined the Marines he was shown as joining from this Militia. "Cornwall Miners 54" noted on a paper about this - I'm not quite clear what this refers to, I guess it's some sort of grouping within the Militia.
I'm not sure if belonging to a Miners Militia indicates that Richard worked as a miner for a while, or if it was open to others to join.
Military Service From 1861 to 1880 Royal Marines - Served in the Royal Marines till invalided out. More information at The National Archives.(I have now seen and photographed these papers and will be writing an account of Richard's Military service)
Occupation 1861 Shoe maker Residence 1881 1, Sutton Road, Plymouth, Devon, England - With wife Lydia and daughters Edith, Bessie and Florance.
One of 3 families (a total of 12 people) living at this address
Occupation 1881 Naval Pensioner - Shown as "Naval Pensioner" in 1881, "Pensioner RN" in 1901, Pensioner R M L Infantry in 1911 (an entry he wrote himself).
R M L Infantry means Royal Marines Light Infantry. The 1911 entry is not contradictory but more detailed, the marines being the fighting element of the Royal Navy.
More about their activies at the time when Richard might have served can be found here.
Residence 1891 3, Queen Annes Place, Plymouth, Devon, England - Living in 2 rooms of this house with wife and 5 children (Bessi,e Eliza, Lydia, Richard and Alebrt). Another family (6 people) had another 2 rooms, and a couple and a woman living alone a room each.
Occupation From 1891 to 1911 Plymouth, Devon, England Boot and shoe maker - Shown as a shoe maker in 1891 and 1911 censuses, but no mention of this in 1881 or 1901. Was this because his main income was his pension or because he had no other work at the time?
On both occasions he was an employee rather than working for himself.
Residence 1901 3, Clare Place, Plymouth, Devon, England - Living in 3 of the 6 rooms in this house, with his wife and 3 children.
Residence 1911 7, Commercial Street, Coxside, Plymouth, Devon, England - Richard was living with his wife and sons Richard and Albert.
From 2 rooms in 1891 and 3 rooms in 1901 the family now had 4 rooms, although only 2 sons remained at home - but they did have a boarder (one Harriet Moore, a 62 year old out-of-work general servant)
Richard and Lydia's dau Lydia with her husband and dau were in another 4 rooms at the same address.
