A seperate entry in the accounts the same year reads "for Attening to Tavistock to bind apprintice 0 1 6". Pauper apprenticeships were agreed before a J.P. Usually the child was bound to the master until they were 21, and the master agreed to teach them a trade and to provide clothing, board and lodging etc. Most commonly boys were apprenticed as learn farm work, and became ag labs, girls learn housework. Presumably Thomas Whitbourn was a tailor, as later records shows Richard to have been one. A skilled trade, this would seem to have been preferable to being an ag lab, at least in Richard's time.
