Name George Henry SPURRELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Apr 1846 - From baptism entry
Baptised 7 Dec 1854 St. James the Great Church, Devonport, Devon, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 1 Mar 2013)
Baptised the same day as his brother Henry George
Gender Male Occupation 1861 Seaman R. N. - Was with his family in Devonport, not on board a ship, at the time of the census.
Occupation From 1871 to 1906 Devonport, Devon, England Shipwright - Shipwright in 1871 and 1901 censuses, and at the time of his second marriage; outfitter in 1881 and 1891 - though I'm sure this must mean the shipwright's job of outfitting, not as in gentleman's clothes.
Om 1911 he was shown as an out of work shipwright.
Residence 1891 33, Union Street, East Stonehouse, Devon, England - Living in 4 rooms of the house, which was shared by 5 households. The Spurrells had most room - one family were in 2 rooms, and a woman by herself, a coupel and a family of four each had only one room. With George and his wife were there 3 children Florence, Clara and Frederick.
Residence 1901 26, Portland Place, Devonport, Devon, England - In 4 rooms of the house - 2 other households occupied another 6 rooms between them.
The 4 the Spurrells had doesn't sound so comfortable as in 1891, since now Florence was married and with George and his wife were 2 daughters, a son in law and 4 grandchildren.
Residence 1906 22, Herbert Place, Devonport, Devon, England - Both George and Jane were shown as of this address at the time of his 2nd marriage
Died Yes, date unknown Siblings 1 brother Patriarch & Matriarch William SPURRELL, b. Est 1690, d. Yes, date unknown (3 x Great Grandfather)
Eliza KINSMAN, b. Abt 1813, d. Dec Q 1850, Stoke Damerel Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 37 years) (Mother)Notes - George was born before George and Eliza married so was he the child of both of them? He is shown as such at the time of his baptism (several years after Eliza died) and he is shown as George's son on his marriage certificate (1906; 1868 not seen) and on the censuses.
This seems to suggest he WAS George's son.
But other children are with George and sons in 1861, shown as his but it seems to me unlikely they all were.
So maybe George was an 'adopted' son rather than a natural (biological) one.

Besides George Henry and Henry George 3 other children were with George at the time of the 1851 census, shown as his: Selina, aged 10, Josiah, aged 9 and Jane, aged 7. Were they really his? - Eliza was a widow when she married him and he was probably only aged about 18 in 1841. It seems to me probable that these were Eliza's children from her first marriage that George had 'adopted'.
All were shown as born Devonport, but quick searches for them as Spurrells, Kinsman or Trewarthas in FreeBMD or the baptisms etc. on FMP (as at 2 Mar 2013) have failed to show up any births, baptisms, marriages or deaths, despite the fairly distinctive names of Selina and Josiah.

Family 1 Priscilla Emma NUTCHER, b. Abt 1847, Devonport, Devon, England , d. Dec Q 1903, Devonport Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 56 years) Married Dec Q 1868 Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England - GRO ref: NUTCHER, Priscilla Emma TO SPURRELL, George Henry q4 1868 Plymouth RD 5b 519.
The 1911 census shows that George and Priscilla had had 5 children, but only 2 were still living. These were almost certainly their 2 daughters Florence and Clara. The one child not shown was probably born and died between censuses, though there is always a possibility with a missing child they are being brought up by other relations.

Family 2 Jane LIDSTONE, b. Abt 1851, d. 24 Apr 1941, 35, Station Road, Keyham, Devon, England (Age ~ 90 years) Married 15 Dec 1906 St. James the Great Church, Devonport, Devon, England - From PR entry (imge on FMP, viewed 1 Mar 2013)
George seems to have had some trouble in working out how to respond to the 1911 census, and included extra information - crossed out but still legible. I believe he is saying that he and Jane lived together for 2 years and were then living apart.
Certainly they were both still alive but living apart in 1911.
