    Notes
    • (Research):As well as the 5 children with George in 1861, another, aged 23, Mary A Spurrell is shown as his daughter in the 1871 census. Born around the same time as son Henry George it seems unlikely she was his twin, since she wasn't baptised at the same time. All 3 of George's wives were widows when he married them, which confuses the picture.
Since Eliza would seem to be the mother of Henry George, and a son of the 2nd Mary Ann was shown as a Murch, I think Mary A was probably a daughter of George's 2nd wife, the 1st Mary Ann.

Besides George Henry and Henry George 3 other children were with George at the time of the 1851 census, shown as his: Selina, aged 10, Josiah, aged 9 and Jane, aged 7. Were they really his? - Eliza was a widow when she married him and he was probably only aged about 18 in 1841. It seems to me probable that these were Eliza's children from her first marriage that George had 'adopted'.
All were shown as born Devonport, but quick searches for them as Spurrells, Kinsman or Trewarthas in FreeBMD or the baptisms etc. on FMP (as at 2 Mar 2013) have failed to show up any births, baptisms, marriages or deaths, despite the fairly distinctive names of Selina and Josiah.

    • GRO ref: Spurrell, George TO Murch, Mary Ann q1 1862 Stoke D RD 5b 604

(The other bride on the page was a Maria Ann JANE and Jane is a common surname in Cornwall, Murch in Devon. Since censuses show that Mary Ann was born in Linkinhorne in Cornwall it seemed likely therefore that George married Mary Ann Jane - but with George and Mary Ann in the 1871 census is a 'son' John H. Murch)
