CWGC entry for Charles
Charles was a Lance Corporal in the The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He had only just got back to the front when he was killed, having been wounded a couple of months before, as reported in the Dover Express (Friday 19 March 1915) and the following day in The Faversham Times and North-East Kent Journal. After this wounding he wrote a letter to his mother from his hospital bed as he had received a bullet wound in the leg;.. " it was rather rough out there, we were up to our knees in water in the trenches. I was picked to go out of the trenches to brigade HQ to bring back a company of fusiliers who were to relieve our company. On the way back from HQ I was shot by a sniper, and unable to walk I was carried back to HQ". (above letter extract thanks to this website)
Will 19 Jan 1915 Written - Charles filled in and signed a form headed 'Short Form of Will', saying
"In the event of my death I give to (a) Mrs. E. Goatham (b) the whole of my property and money." (italics indicate the words not printed).
This will is accompanied by an 'Informal Will' document issued by the war office, which besides information identifying Charles includes the statement:
"The enclosed document dated 19th January 1915 and signed Pte. C. Goatham appears to have been written or executed by the person named in the margin while he was "in actual military service" within the meaning of the Wills Act, 1837, and has been recognised by the War Department as constituting a valid will." (italics indicate words not printed)
This document was dated 4. 12. 1916.
The register of soldier's effects shows that the army had £18 1s 5d of Charles', payment of which to 'Mo[ther] & Sole Leg[atee] Emma' was authorised on 8 Dec 1916. Payment of a further 5s, also to Emma, a war gratuity, was authorised on 4 Sep 1919.
