It is the wife of Arthur (son of John) who is shown as 'd. of Constable' in 1620 visitation.
** my ancestor William may have been the son of Arthur - 1st I thought it most likely, then unlikely, now quite likely!!! **
Since William named a son Walter it seems likely he may have had a brother Walter, which was the first clue that he could have been a son of Arthur, and then I found that Arthur did have a son William of the right sort of age - but is he MY William?
When I discovered my William probably had a brother Crispin (his son in his will refers to 'unkle Crispin Wotton') and may well have had a sister Barbara, neither names of children of Arthur that I have found, it seemed less likely that Arthur was my William's father.
In addition, Crispin was clearly still alive when William's son Walter wrote his will in 1691, and seems likely to have been the Crispin who was buried in Blackawton in 1709; that is more likely if Crispin was a younger brother of William, maybe 20 plus years younger than William who may have been born about 1605, but less likely to be a son of Arthur who was having children by 1591. Could Crispin not have been an uncle, as in a parent's brother, but a parent's cousin, using the term for an older relative as we might today? I don't know.
The lack of a record for Barbara as a daughter of Arthur now seems less of a problem. Although I do still think that her son Richard was probably the cousin that William the goldsmith (son of 'my William') referred to in his will, I think that he was most likely a 2nd cousin or even more distant.
From Chancery Court cases it is clear that Barbara Cliffe nee Wotton had brothers Walter and Andrew (as well as a sister Elizabeth). From the tree in the book of 1620 visitation records it would appear that Barbara and her siblings were the offspring of William (son of John, the Totnes MP, and his wife Agnes). The tree also shows they had a son Arthur. That could be this Arthur, and if he is the father of my ancestor William that would make William's son William and Richard Cliffe 2nd cousins, close enough that it is not unreasonable to suppose they could have known each other and William have left Richard a small bequest in his will.
I said I may have fused two Arthurs. Alternatively, it could be children of 2 wives of one Arthur. Assuming for a moment there was just one Arthur, then he would have been aged about 36 when son Barnabas was born.
Plenty of time to have had earlier children by an earlier marriage. John (who the visitation shows was a son of Arthur) and Richard of Halwell (whose parentage I don't know) could have been such.
'My' William could then be the son of Richard and have links to both Richard Cliffe and Samuel Wotton. (William the goldsmith would then be 2nd cousin once removed to Richard Cliffe, still close enough to leave a bequest).
