    • Date from account of first part of the journey, reported in the East Kent Gazette of 24 May 1884, p. 5, col. 7.
Residence From 1886 to 1896  Queensland, Australia See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • By 1886 when George was married to 1896 when he obtained a licence to sell tobacco all events concerning George and his family seem to be in Queensland so presumably that is where the family were living.
Sometime between 1896 and 1900 George and his family appear to have moved to New South Wales.
Occupation 7 Mar 1896  Queensland, Australia See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Licence to sell tobacco
    • A licence was issued to George in Queensland
    Emigration Between 1901 and 1911
    Australia to New Zealand
    • In Australia in the 1901 census, but in New Zealand 1911 electoral roll.
Residence 1901  97, Walker Street, North Sydney, Cumberland, New South Wales, Australia See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Most Australian census records do not survive, but 1901 records for New South Wales do, showing the name of householders with the numbers of males and females in each house. In total there were 3 of each in George's house.
The males were probably George, and his sons Charles and Albert, his  other three sons having died in infancy. The three females presumably included his wife and daughter Ida; the identity of the other is unknown.
Residence From 1911 to 1914  Marama Street, Sunshine, Anderson's Bay, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • In both the 1911 and 1914 electoral rolls George and his wife were simply shown as living at Sunshine; in their son Charles Alexander's entry it was more specific and shown as Marama Road; I am guessing there is where all 3 lived
(n.b. all 3 shown as Gotham in 1914)
    Occupation From 1911 to 1919
    Commercial traveller
    • According to the electoral rolls. Two entries for 1919 - one when he was living in Nelson shows him as a commercial traveller, the other when he appears to have moved to Timaru shows him as a warehouseman.
Residence 1919  Bridge Street, Nelson, New Zealand See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
Residence 1919  Nelson Terrace, Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • It appears George and his wife may have separated, as they are not shown together in the 1919 census - Jane is with the 'children' (grown-up)
There are 2 entries for George, which I guess indicates he moved during the year. Both include the unusual middle name Gotha - I think this shows it is the same man, though it could be a son I haven't yet discovered.
(The Nelson Terrace entry had the surname as Gootham)
There were also 2 entries for 1928 (both in Wellington, where it is clear this George later lived and died), but only one after that.
Occupation 1919  Timaru, New Zealand See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

    • From electoral roll
    Occupation 1940
    Jeweller?
    • Described as "a jeweller and pensioner" in 1940 newspaper article, though never found in other references. Maybe he sold paste jewellery when a commercial traveller?
Or more likely a newspaper hack mis-heard or mis-read his notes - traveller and jeweller are rather similar looking words.

    • GRO ref: Goatham, Henry to Eason, Harriett Pemily q2 1861 Medway RD 2a 515

Although the marriage certificate shows both Henry and Harriet as resident in Chatham, Harriet had lived with her family in Flushing Street in Milton, where her mother and siblings were still living in 1861, although by then Harriet had moved to live where she was working, in Chatham. Less than 3 weeks before the wedding Henry was living with a sister and her family in Milton. Perhaps he described himself as living in Chatham to save the need to arrange for banns to be read in Milton.
While Harriet's residence in the parish would have enabled them legally to marry in Chatham, many marriages seemed to take place there where neither of the couple was resident. The large size of the parish and the number of transitory residents due to the dockyard probably made it effectively impossible to check that at least one of a couple was resident (as required by the 1753 Hardwicke Act)
