GRO ref: GROWNS, Charles q1 1862 Hollingbourn RD 2a 509; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Wood
However, checking further I can see that a Charles Growns died in the same RD in q4 1876 aged 14, so that is almost certainly the one whose birth was reg in 1862)

    • Frances Jane, five siblings, her parents and a grandson of theirs were living at 4 Millcroft Cottages by the time of the 1911 census. The family were still living there in 1919, according to "Alfred's" WW1 service record, though of course some of the children had probably left home by then.

    • GRO ref: Growns, George q4 1917 aged 59 Strood RD 2a 828
This agrees with where the family were living, though the date of George's baptism suggests he was only 54. However, when his son Alfred joined up in WW1 he named his father as next-of-kin, but a form listing the relations of deceased soldiers in 1919 shows George had died, so he must have died between 1915 and 1919.
This death is the only one to fit.
It is clear that George died soon after his son Alfred was killed in WW1; one wonders if his son's death precipitated his own.

There seems no doubt this marriage was theirs - Growns is not a common surname, and the place is right and the date consistent with the length of marriage shown in the 1911 census. But the second Christian names are surprising. There is none shown for George when he was baptised or for Fanny when her birth was registered, according to the index. That said, I have not seen Fanny's baptism register entry.

The 1911 census shows that they had had 11 children, 1 of whom had by then died. Actually it was filled in with 10 in total, 10 still living and 1 died! That it was 11 in total was the enumerator's correction - but I guess it could have been 10 in total, 9 still living.

The ages of the children in this family are regularly exaggerated a little in the censuses, may be the age they would be that year (I haven't checked exactly)
