    Notes
    • (Research):What became of Davy and Joanna?
With a name as common as Jones it is not easy to be sure.
There seem to have been no children of a Davy and Joanna baptised in Teignmouth (but some but possibly not all free churces included in the records I have searched). There was a William, son of William and Joannah baptised in West Teignmouth Parish Church in 1824 - could this be them, William in mistake for Davy? Probably not, but will check for such a family to rule out. More likely, there was a Robert, son of David and Ann baptised in the same church in 1812 - could Ann be Joanne? The only burial I can find in Teignmouth that might fit either of them is an Ann, age given as 50 when she was buried on 19 July 1829, so the right age. In addition, when her aunt Elizabeth Gotham wrote her will in 1827 she referred to her as Ann Jones, not Joanna Jones. (She was referred to amongst the children of Elizabeth's brother William, so it seems clear it was this Gotham - Jones marriage, and not one I have not discovered). Perhaps Joanna's name was shortened to Ann to make it easy to distinguish her from her mother. It seems common when a child had the same name as a parent to use a different shortened form, or a middle name if they had one.

It is clear that it was this William who married Johanna Bennett, as he was still living when his sister Elizabeth wrote her will in 1827, and she named him and also named several of his children.
