Probably died as Mary Elizabeth Thomas as she had not remarried prior to 1939, when listed as widow Mary Elizabeth with her younger sister Ethel and their mother in the 1939 register. Aged 66 and with no change of surname recorded it is unlikely she remarried after that. Ethel was listed first in the 1939 register so it appears Mary was in Ethel's house. Ethel was still living in the same house when she died in 1967 died in 1959, so it would seem most likely that Mary would have died in Newcastle RD or in Stoke on Trent RD if, like Ethel, she died in hospital.
The original GRO index shows a Mary E Thomas did die in Stoke RD in 1947, but age given as 78, when she would only have been 74, ages usually more accurate by this period (and dob was correct in the 1939 register) and more conclusively the GRO online index shows that Mary's middle name Ellen so it is very unlikely to record the death of this Mary Elizabeth. One in Todmorden RD in 1946 can similarly be ruled out (only 1 year out but middle name Ellen, plus no known connections with the Todmorden area).
Looking at death registrations in Staffordshire or the South Riding of Yorkshire (where her husband died), 1939-1975 the only match is this one:

This is the same Reg District as that in which her husband died so it seems she may have moved back there after 1939.

The 1911 census shows that James and Mary had had ten children, two of whom were no longer living. They were probably the 2 not shown here, having been born and died between censuses. (The children shown here are all on the censuses 1881-1911)
