Name Richard NORTHMORE Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 6 Feb 1815 - From register for baptism / reception into the church. Likely born St Stephens (place of supposed baptism) but shown as born Devon in the 1841 census.
Baptised St. Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall, England - Before 1820. Based on claim by his mother that he had been privately baptised at St. Stephens in Cornwall. (see 'received into the Church' event)
There is no entry for this event on the Cornwall OPC database (as at 22 Feb 2022) but I have not yet checked their coverage of the relevant parishes, not looked at BTs.
** Place uncertain ** - St. Stephens. Cornwall can refer to one of 3 places, St Stephen-in-Brannel, a village near St Austell, St Stephen-by-Launceston or St Stephens by Saltash. Until I learn more about this family either the Launceston or Saltash St. Stephens seems most likely, both, but especially Saltash, being quite near where most Northmores lived.
Gender Male Received into the Church 6 Feb 1820 Holy Cross Church, Newton Ferrers, Devon, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 22 Feb 2022)
"* Febry 6th Richard Son of Richard & Elizabeth, surname: Northmore, abode Noss, father a Husbandman, ceremony performed by John Yonge"
Appears in the baptism register without a note that this was just a child being received into the church, or a provisional baptism, but there is a note at the foot of the page:
"The Mother of Richard and James Northmore assured me the former was born Febry 6th. 1815 & privately baptized at St. Stephens in Cornwall - The latter was born March 1st. 1817 & privately baptized at Ermington in devon. Witness my hand this 6th day of Febry 1820 John Yonge Rector"
Occupation From 1828 to 1851 Mariner in Merchant Service - From 1841 census and Master's Certificate
Residence 1841 16, White Cross Street, Plymouth, Devon, England - Richard was with his wife Mary Ann at this address, within Charles parish.
Fourteen people were at this address, in 4 households. With Richard and Mary Ann was a 12 year old Caroline Baker. With Baker being Mary Ann's maiden name it is likely Caroline was a younger sister; given Mary Ann's age Caroline can't have been her daughter.
Occupation 10 Jan 1851 Received Master's Certificate of Service - The certificate shows that Richard had served 22 years in the British Merchant Service, as boy, mate and master. He had worked in both the coasting and foreign trade.
(The certificate gives the same date of birth as that recorded in the register when received into the church, showing it was this Richard)
