    • GRO ref: GOATHAM, William to EVANS, Charlotte q2 1841 Milton RD 5 441Appear to have married by 6 June as they are together on census night.

I have not yet seen the marriage PR entry or certificate, but I strongly suspect that Charlotte was a widow when she married William. Her maiden name is variously shown as Barrow or Evans on the birth certificates of her children (information from the GRO online index, viewed 5 Nov 2016).
This could suggest she went by both names at different times or on different occasions prior to her first marriage, but I can find nothing to suggest she did, or any reason why she might, nor any close link to an Evans family (e.g. she could have been known by both surnames if after her father's death her mother had remarried to an Evans, but nothing like this appears to have happened).

The censuses show Charlotte was born about 1817 in Faversham and there is a Charlotte Barrow who fits this perfectly. In addition, in the 1841 census Charlotte Barrow's mother is living in Bredgar very close to William and Charlotte (just a couple of entries apart on the census), with an Aylett family. It seems that Charlotte's sister Ann had married one John Aylett in 1834, and Ann's mother was with them. I think it probable that after Charlotte was widowed by the death of her 'Evans' husband she went to live with or at least visited her mother and sister in Bredgar, and thus got to know neighbour William Goatham.

William was still shown as married not a widower in the 1871 census, but Charlotte was not with him and their 3 youngest. She was living in her birthplace Faversham when she died; whether she had left him and was there in 1871 I don't know.
