Name Ethel LANDS Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 1878 Morice Town, Devonport, Devon, England - From the 1881 census where shown as aged 2
GRO ref: Q2 5b 368
Gender Female Residence 1881 Burney, Roche, St. Austell, Cornwall, England - At the time of the 1881 census when Ethel was aged 2 she was not with her parents, her father being at sea and her mother working as a live-in general servant in the home of a builder and his family (wife and teenage son) in Devonport.
Rather, Ethel was living with an uncle and aunt, Absalom (a hawker) and Elizabeth Knight at Roche in St Austell. No other children were present.
Occupation 1901 Dressmaker - From PR entry for her marriage (but see note below)
Residence 1911 Pensilva, Cornwall, England - Like her parents, Ethel and her children had left 54 West Hill Road and moved to Pensilva between 1901 and 1911, but the Mann family were living separately from Ethel's parents now, in their own 3 room cottage.
Ethel was present with 3 daughters on census night, shown as wife rather than head, presumably her husband was the head of the family but at sea.
Died Yes, date unknown Patriarch & Matriarch Matthew LANDS, b. Abt 1801, Blackawton, Devon, England , d. Mar Q 1871, Kingsbridge Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 70 years) (Grandfather)
Jane WILLIAMS, b. Abt 1843, St. Austell, Cornwall, England , d. Mar Q 1934, Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 91 years) (Mother)Notes - A Puzzle.
It appears that Ethel may have been entered twice in the 1901 census, once with her parents, no occupation shown, and also as a visitor at 52 Cotehele Avenue. The head of the family was, like her father had been, a stoker in the RN so it is quiet possible the families were friends. Her parents might have added her to their census return not realising she would be away on census night.
The puzzle is that the Ethel Lands in Cotehele Avenue was shown as a music teacher, but her marriage certificate shows Ethel as a dress maker.
That could suggest they were 2 different Ethels, and so they may have been, but the birth registrations (using FreeBMD) only show one Ethel Lands born in Devon 1860-1880, and both entries show a birthplace of Devonport, and I think an age of 23. A line through that in the Cotehele Avenue entry means it could just be 28.

Father Charles Albert Pitts LANDS, b. 18 Mar 1848, Blackawton, Devon, England , d. Mar Q 1935, Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age 86 years) Mother Jane WILLIAMS, b. Abt 1843, St. Austell, Cornwall, England , d. Mar Q 1934, Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 91 years) Married Sep Q 1870 Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England - GRO ref: Q3 Plymouth 5b 428
Two other children were born who could be the children of Charles and Jane (i.e. surname Lands, born Stoke Damerel or Plymouth RDs between 1870 and 1890); both died in infancy and would not have shown in any census:
William Charles, born Q2 1871 (Stoke D 5b 354), died Q3 1871 (Plymouth 5b 190)
Mabel Elizabeth, born Q4 1879 (Stoke D 5b 349), died Q3 1880 (Stoke D 5b 239)
(Mabel Elizabeth is in the burial register for the parish of Stoke Damerel; parents are not named but abode is given as 3 Clarence Place; died 22 Aug, bur 25 Aug, aged 9 months)
It seems likely that these were the children of Charles and Jane as the 1911 census shows that they had had 3 children, 2 of whom were then dead.

(from PR entry, image on FMP, viewed 1 Oct 2014)
Despite the gap in children between 1903 and 1908, the 1911 census shows that up to that time Ethel and William had only had the 3 children who were still living.
The inclusion of mother's maiden names in the birth index from 1911 suggests there were no other children born after 1911.
