    Notes
    • (Research):Although Richard was "of this parish" when he married in Stockbury in 1776, there is no sign of any other Whiteheads in Stockbury besides Richard at this time. I would guess he found work in Stockbury and moved to the parish for that reason.

      What I did have of Richard's ancestors was from a GRU contact  I was in touch with her sometime ago, and haven't had a reply to a more recent query asking her about this. I don't know what the evidence is - if it is speculation / probable / pretty certain ...
      However, since it showed Richard as the son of a Charles Whitehead and Ann Dunstan who married in Orpington I think it unlikely that they were his parents. Also required him to be baptised c. 1749, contrary to the 1739 suggested by the KFHS transcript.

      There were Whiteheads in Newington-next-Sittingbourne in late 1600s / early 1700s including several Richards who could be ancestors of this Richard.

      Lewis: Richard had a gt grandson called Lewis Whitehead, b c 1831. The CKS / CCA catalogue has entries for a bankrupt 'Lewis Whitehead junr' in 1831-4 - any connection? Worth keeping a look-out for Lewis Whiteheads.

      From a quick look at FamilySearch:

      • a Lewis Whitehead and wife Mary Ann had dau Mary Elizabeth bapt Chatham 1832;

      • a Lewis Whitehead was bur Chatham in 1859 (aged 72)

      • a Willis F Whitehead died Chicago 1922, born 11 Feb 1854 in Nunda, New York - father was a Lewis Whitehead born Chatham (England), Willis' mother was born Vermount.

      • a Lewis Whitehead marr in Monroe, Wisconsin in 1859 - born England (n.b. not necessarily in Kent), parents William and Anna - was this a son of William b 1776 and Ann nee Prior bapt 1781?

      It is interesting that the marriage took place so long after the banns were read - about 18 months later. (were the banns still valid? - to be checked) Mary was a minor and Richard seems to have been some years older so perhaps her parents did not consent at first. She was still a minor when they did marry, but being about 6 months pregnant at the time perhaps further resistance seemed hopeless. It seems unlikely that they would have been too bothered about her being pregnant and not married - her mother had an illegitimate child and then was about six months pregnant with another when she did marry, and two of Mary's sisters went on to  have 3 illegitimate children between them, and one was also about 6 months pregnant at marriage.
