Siblings 1 sister Patriarch & Matriarch Notes - (Research):Who was Deborah?
At marriage Deborah was recorded as a 'Gothan'. Usually a variant of Gotham, but on this occasion I think it was a variant of Ga(u/w/ )thern.
Not only is there no other evidence for a Deborah Go(a)tha(m/n), but there is a baptism for a Deborah Gawthern, whose baptism suggests an age close to that of this Deborah.
Added to this, her widower appears to have remarried, in Canterbury in 1821; his bride was Margaretta Gauthern.
Did William marry two people with similar surnames by co-incidence, or was Deborah really a Gauthern?
The only Margaret(ta) Ga(u/w/ )thern I can find to fit was a sister of Deborah!
Although remarriage to a deceased wife's sister was not allowed, it often happened. When Deborah died she left young sons and who more natural to move in with William to look after than and their father than her younger spinster sister.
