    Miscellaneous 1839
    On the convict ship Barrossa
    • A medical journal for the ship shows that in 1839 one Elizabeth  Fitze, a 1 year old child of one of the guards, was taken ill and died on the ship.
Was she a daughter of Susan? - I don't know.
Was James working as a guard on the Barrossa? The ship had left for New South Wales from Sheerness, which was in Minster Parish, where James and Susan were living at the time of the 1841 census. James was clearly a skilled blacksmith, but this may have been as skill needed on the ship. The journal entries cover 7 July to 16 Dec 1839, the ship actually sailing on 31st July and arriving in New South Wales on 8th Dec. Elizabeth became ill with a mild case of measles on 29th July and died 15th Aug.
(from Discovery entry (folio. 4), and image of the entry on Ancestry, viewed 6 Sep 2018)
A muster for the ship would help, but I cannot see one indexed on Discovery.
