Typical of Granddad!
Typical of Granddad!
I'd heard of this photo before I saw it - I believe Granddad was known for his love of reading and this was typical of him (though he also played netball on board ship and football ashore; I remember his description of the netball - it was a lot rougher than the game I played at school!)
P G Wodehouse was one of Granddad's favourite authors; I have one or 2 of his Wodehouse books now, and I think I probably gave Granddad one or 2 as Christmas or birthday presents. Amazing to think Wodehouse's…

The grave of shipmate R. G. Welch
The grave of shipmate R. G. Welch
While in Auckland in 1926 shipmate Richard Gordon Welch died in the General Hospital in Auckland of Addison’s disease (died on 20 Nov). Thousands of miles from his family, a headstone was erected by his shipmates.
He was just a few months older than Granddad, but born the opposite end of the country, in Cornwall.

I've no idea where this is; the hills look wrong to be above Kingswear so I don't think it's taken from RBNC (the College in Darthmouth).

I guess the boys were carrying ship's provisions for these sailors, on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

Assisting at a wedding
Assisting at a wedding
A wedding in Dartmouth.

Granddad is the second from the left, as you look at the photo. Granddad worked at the College in the late 1920s, so I guess this was a wedding during that period.

Mr and Mrs W. G. Tebbutt
Mr and Mrs W. G. Tebbutt
This looks like a wedding photo. Wilfred George Tebbutt married Margaret E. Wilson in the Kettering area in the third quarter of 1928, but this is dated 3rd April 1929. This is 2 days after my grandparents married so it looks like Wilfred was sending his compliments on their marriage with a photo of his own wedding!
Wilfred's birth was registered the 3rd quarter of 1899 so he was the same age as Granddad.
I don't know how long the friendship lasted; I see that Wilfred died in 1963, the year I…

A letter to Granddad!
A letter to Granddad!
Granddad was working for Admiral Dunbar-Nasmith when the latter was based at Trincomalee, an important base for the Royal Navy. The Admiral had his family with him and evidently all of them knew Granddad.
