    • There is clearly something not quite right here; the gravestone seems to show a date of death 4 days after the burial!
So do I have the wrong burial or the wrong gravestone?
This Robin seems to have been baptised, married and buried with this name, though recorded as Robert at the time of the baptism of some of his children.
There is no clear evidence of any other Robins but was it used as a pet name for any of the Roberts? If so, could the burial be of someone else?
Although there is no other burial of a Robin and you would expect him to have been buried as Robin as at his children's baptisms his name could have been mis-recorded.

Given that the only bit of the year visible on the gravestone is the right side of the 3rd digit and the 4th digit was the year really 1805 or (as the British Listed Buildings website has it) 1795?
The gravestone has an age, which I think says 46 (only other possibility is 40). If the former then it fits perfectly with his baptism if it is this Robin and he died in 1805. I can't find any other Robert / Robin who would have been 40 or 46 in 1795 or 1805, in Stokenham or neighbouring parishes. The closest, Robin's 2nd cousin Robert, who would have been 42 in 1795, is clearly buried with his wife in Stokenham (grave and PR evidence).

Despite the discrepancy I do therefore believe that it was this Robin who was buried in 1805 and that the gravestone is his. Since the previous burial was in July and the next not until the following January it is not possible to tell if the date is likely to be wrong from the date sequence. It would be worth checking the BTs.
There may have been some uncertainty over the date of death, as Robin drowned and his body may not have been recovered immediately. Possibly he was known to have drowned on 4th October, and this date was much earlier than the monumental mason was used to and he accidentally carved November.
