Mary Ann VOGWELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Mary Ann VOGWELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 2 Feb 1816 St. Andrew’s Church, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England
- From PR (DFHS transcription, not seen PR image)
'Mary Ann Clynick Vogwell', parents William and Elizabeth, abode: Coward's Herrabear [probably Horrabridge], father's occupation: labourer
Gender Female In the Dock 1832 - At the Lent Assizes in 1832 Mary was found guilty of "stealing five yards of ribbon and other articles". For this she was sentenced to 14 years transportation.
Like so many sentences it appears to have been commuted, though to what I don't know, but I think it must have been the same Mary Ann who was convicted again in 1838 - and this time was transported.
To be added: details of Mary Ann's conviction for this and the sad story of her early life this brings to light.
In the Dock 1838 Plymouth, Devon, England
- Sentenced at the Quarter Sessions
Transportation voyage 25 Apr 1838 to 25 Dec 1838 On the "John Renwick" - One of 173 women convicts transported on this voyage - list of names and place of sentencing
In the Dock 28 Jan 1845 New South Wales, Australia
Certificate of Freedom - Shows Mary Anne Vogwell had been transported on the "John Renwick" in 1838, no. 45/0137, she was the wife of William Downes (transported on the "Lady Harewood" in 1832)
From New South Wales convict index (citation [4/4396; Reel 1019])
Died Yes, date unknown
Siblings1 brother and 9 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch
William VOGWELL, b. Est 1720, d. Nov 1789, Whitchurch, Devon, England
(Age ~ 69 years) (Great Grandfather)
Elizabeth CLYNICK, b. Abt 1791, d. Yes, date unknown (Mother)
Notes - I have no evidence that the Mary Ann convicted in 1838 was this Mary Ann. However, I do have evidence that the Mary Ann convicted in 1832 was this Mary Ann, and it seems probable that the same type of crime was committed by the same person. In addition, the records show that at the time of the 1838 conviction Mary Ann had 2 previous convictions.

- Entry on FMP - Buckland Monachorum involved - no place given in search results - I thought this might be banns (some entries are) but same on Dartmoor Press as marriage, plus 29th April 1815 was a Saturday and banns were (and are) read on Sundays.
Also, entry on Vogwell website - shows William Vogwell bachelor marr Elizabeth Clynick spinster.
William and Elizabeth seem to have had at least one other child I have yet to find - the petition William made on behalf of his daughter Mary Ann in 1832 refers to 9 children, but Susanna had not then been born.
Given there is a dau Ann, aged 13, in the 1841 census, who doesn't fit clearly as one of the known daughters I suspect this was the 10th. The Ann born 1824 had not died when a 13 year old would have been born; I guess Ann was a second middle name.

Family William DOWNES, b. Abt 1805 Married 1839 New South Wales, Australia
- NSW Govt Index shows Downes, William married Vogwell, Mary A in district CJ. Registration no. V1839134 23B/1839
I'm not sure if William and Mary had any children.
The births of 3 children to a William and Mary Downes were registered in the period 1839 - 1866, as shown here.
With 2 such common Christian names and a surname far from rare it's possible these were the children of a different William and Mary but there was no other marriage of a William Downes in NSW in the years 1830-1839.
