Gender Male Civic duty 1783 Whitchurch, Devon, England Jury Qualification - Nicholas Dyer, yeoman, appears on the list of those from Whitchurch Parish eligible to serve on juries (i.e. petty or grand, not just Manor Court Juries) for the year 1783.
This suggests he owned sufficient property or (more likely in his case) qualified through a lease held (see details).
Having attained qualification bt 1783, it is perhaps surprising that he is no longer listed in 1799.
So far I have only seen this through the lists transcribed on the FODA website (1 per decade in the C18th) - it would be interesting to see the lists for other years.
Why did he not appear in 1799? - had ill health (he died 2 years later) or economic difficulties (or both - the latter caused by the former) forced him to give up his land?
Was it ill health that made him unsuitable for Jury service?
Was his inclusion in 1783 or omission in 1799 an error?
Or, since the land had to be worth £20 a year, had the value fallen such that this had ceased to be the case?

Occupation From 1783 to 1791 Whitchurch, Devon, England Yeoman - Shown as a yeoman in the list of those qualified to be jurors (1783), he is also shown on the Whitchurch 1791 Rate List from the Churchwardens' Accounts [PWDRO796/26]. That list shows him as occupier of Woodtown, Westlands and Hannafords.
I plan to look to look at other juror lists and at the CW accounts etc. to see what more we can learn about Nicholas Dyer.

Notes - (Research):A Nicholas Dyer marr an Ann Smith in Whitchurch in 1779 (at least, banns were read), was it an earlier marriage of this Nicholas?
There is a marr in Whitchurch of a Nicolas Dyer to Ann Wyer in 1742 which could be this Nicholas's parents?
A Nicholas Dyer was bur in Whitchurch in 1746 - I guess a relation of this Nicholas, thought pos his father but since Nicholas the father prob had a dau children more than 9 mths after the 1746 burial was it the burial of another son called Nicholas - but only found the bapt of one? Or this Nicholas' grandfather?

A John was bur 1748 and a Jane, dau of John in 1721, Ann dau of John in 1740
In 1711 a John Dier had marr Susanna Couch.
A widow Alice was bur in 1713; in 1684 an Adam Dier had mar Alce Bickford.
I suspect that the line could be:
gen 1: Adam = Alice
gen 2: John = Susanna Couch Nicholas (1)
(2 sons of Adam)
gen 3: Nicholas (2) = Ann Wyer
(son of John or Nicholas)
gen 4: this Nicholas (3)!
The John who was marr to the Ann who died in 1746 may be the John who first married Susanna Couch, or maybe a John not shown, son of John or of Nicholas (1).

Shows Nicholas Dyer and Margaret Matticott were both 'of this Parish', no marital statuses or occupation given, married by Licence. Nicholas signed, Margaret made her mark. Witnesses Edwd:[?] Bray and Robert Matthews both signed (Robert Matthews a witness to many marriages in Whitchurch at this time so probably Parish Clerk)
From DFHS transcribed data I thought a Nicholas Dyer had married Ann Smith in Whitchurch in 1779, but with PRs available it appears banns were read on 11 and 18 April, then the 3rd reading not unitl 6 June. (I don't think this is simply an error in the month, as Banns were always read on a Sunday, and 6 May was not a Sunday. The Banns for another couple were read in May, so it is not clear why those for Nicholas and Ann weren't. Maybe there had been some uncertainty about whether the marriage could or would go ahead. If so this seems to have resurfaced as it seems NO marriage followed. (The Banns show both Nicholas and Ann were of Whitchurch, so that is where the marriage should have taken place, but the PRs have no such marriage, nor a missing page ...)
