    Notes
    • (Research):What became of this Mary? Is she:
the one who died aged 7 in Nov 1822 and was buried in Boxgrove
OR the one who married Richard Longland in 1834, subsequently living in Westerton, Westhampnett until her death in 1881
OR the one who married William Leggett in Arundel in 1840?

Both those who married consistently have their birthplace recorded as Boxgrove in the censuses, but the age of the one who married in Arundel suggests a birth about 1817 and I suspect was the one baptised in Westhampnett on 1 Mar 1818, illegitimate daughter of pauper Susan Halcom.
In addition, the marriage was after the introduction of new forms, with father's names recorded; the SFHG transcribed data on the marriage index CD gives the name of William's father but not Mary's, suggesting there was a blank on the certificate - common for an illegitimate child, but I've never heard of this for a legitimate child, i.e. consistent with being Susan's daughter, not with being this Mary.

The age quoted for the one who married Richard Longland, though, points to a birth about 1815, and seems much more likely to be this one.
The Longlands were probably living next door to the Stewarts in Westerton; this may not have been chance - Harriet Stewart was nee Holcombe and a first cousin to this Mary, as well as 2nd cousins 3 times over (at least).

Mary would seem to have been underage when she married Richard Longland; there is therefore a good chance that the banns or marriage entry will give her father's name as giving consent, so this may clarify if it was this Mary who married Richard Longland.
