  • Name Doris Hazel Leontine GOATHAM
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Born 6 Sep 1923  Sheppey Reg Dist, Sheppey, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • For some reason there seems to be 2 registrations, or at least 2 index entries for the registration, of the birth:
      GRO ref: Goatham, Doris H. L., mother's maiden name Richardson, Sheppey RD - (1) q3 1923 2a 1757; (2) - q2 1924 2a 1691; GRO online index (for both entries) shows middle names as Hazel Leontine
On the second occasion the index also shows her name as TODD, Doris H L

It would seem that by this time Doris's mother Leontine was living as the husband of Erroll, but being still married to Edward 'Ernest' Todd she had not married Erroll. Hence it appears when Leontine and Erroll had Doris they should have registered her birth as a Todd, the mother's true surname, as well as Goatham, the name she was going by. Somehow their failure to do this in 1923 must have come to light and so she was re-registered in 1924.

Of course I cannot be certain that Doris was Erroll's daughter - maybe Leontine had left Ernest when pregnant and Erroll had been happy to bring up Doris as his own. If that were the case and Ernest discovered that Doris had only been registered at birth as a Goatham he may have objected and caused the re-registration. Whatever the circumstances of the re-registration, Doris continued to use the surname Goatham (and it was Errol who was granted administration of her estate following her early death).
Erroll was the informant for Doris's death and does give his description as 'father' there - and she is described as his daughter in the 'Rank or Profession' field. Her surname only as Goatham, although she had used the surname Todd when she was the informant for her mother's death just three years before.
    Gender Female

    Occupation 1939
    Domestic Servant
    • From the 1939 register. Appears not to have been a live-in servant, as she is with her parents in the register.
    Occupation 1946
    Domestic help
    • At the time of her death she was recorded as such. She was living at home with her father, and I guess the description may mean she was a help at home, her mother having died some three years earlier, but it is possible she was employed as a domestic help.
Died 27 May 1946  The County Hospital, Pembury, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location

Married? Not married or evidence to suggest they didn't marry
    Notes
    • Presumably didn't marry because Leontine was already married.
I think that Erroll was the Goatham with whom Leontine had a relationship because he was granted administration when their daughter Doris died.

The only other male Goatham of a suitable age that I am aware of on Sheppey that Leontine could have had a relationship with was Charles Henry (born 1892); if he had been a close relation of Errolls it would be possible to speculate that Erroll could have been granted administration for Doris as a close relation rather than father, but actually Erroll and Charles Henry were quite distantly related, 3rd cousins once removed, so it seems almost certain Charles was not Leontine's partner.
