  	Bequeathed £5 by his mother's step-father, Bartholomew Sawdy. Neither his siblings nor his parents were left a bequest; possibly he (Bartholomew Mattacott) was the godson of Bartholomew Sawdy. A glance at the names in Meavy Register for the short period (a lot later than this) when godparents were shown showed that a lot of children had the name of a godparent. Such a relationship is not shown in the will extract, although it is for a couple of other people; the extract note s the will was in poor condition so perhaps this was recorded and not present. Also, the 3 people recorded as godchildren either lack or relationship (e.g. "to the daughter of Nicholas Stockman my goddaughter" and "to Walter Gylle my godson") so maybe 2 pieces of information was considered adequate to identify the individual.
