Notes - The Matticotts have clearly been in the area a long time, with numerous PR entries in the parishes of Whitchurch, Meavy and Buckland Monachorum (one Maddacot entry in Walkhampton) going back to the C16th, also a number in Worth's "Calendar of the Tavistock Parish Records".
The book "The ancient stone crosses of Dartmoor and its borderland" (William Crossing, 1902) mentions in chapter VI (a chapter entitled "The Crosses of Meavy" that "In a corner of the churchyard is ... ; and nearer to the lich-gate is a squared granite block on which an inscription is cut in relief. This marks the grave of one Walter Mattacot, and the letters on the stone tells us that he died in 1657."
Data available from the Dartmoor Press shows that Walter died aged 22, on 29th April. (I've now seen this and taken photos)
Walter and Bartholomew were popular Christian names in the Matticott family over several centuries. - (Research):
Matticott research
Spellings variants include "Madd..." instead of "Matt..." and 'a' in place of 'i'. ('d' variant tends not to show in include similar names searches) Usually has 2 ts or ds in the middle, sometimes only 1 t at the end, sometimes 2 cs in the middle! Occasionally e instead of i or a in the middle. Or an e on the end.
"Mat*cot*" and "Mad*cot*" work well for (I think) picking up all or nearly all the variaions.
In Sampford Spiney PRs:
Not yet linked to tree:
"1782 Joan Matticott was buried the 16th June"
"1806 Betty Matticott was Buried the 8th of June" - could be the Battey born 1727
Sampford Spiney PRs cover the years:
Baptisms 1654 to 1660, 1704/5 to 1970
Marriages 1654 to 2007
Burials 1713/14 to 1989
- this means if Bartholomew / children of Wm and Joan were bapt in SS their bapt will be missing from the PRs. Hopefully the BTs will be readable, I believe these cover 1608-1812 (on m/f in Exeter).
In Whitchurch:
earliest Mattacott event indexed on FMP - bur of Reginald 1571
C17th
Mattacotts esp in Fremington / Chittlehampton / St Giles in the Wood area - including a Bartholomew who marr in the former in 1617. One could get the impression from FMP records that the Mattacotts moved in the C17th from North Devon to the Whitchurch area; the problem is, the only Devon records for this period on FMP are marriage entries from Boyd's Index, so bapt and bur in N Devon aren't showing, and as Boyds index doesn't cover parishes in the Whitchurch area with most Mattacotts those marriages are missing till indexed by FMP - where the PRs go back far enough. Even so, the occurrence of a Bartholomew in N Devon looks like an individual or family may have moved at some point, though in which direction is not clear. (Bartholomew continued as a family name in the Whitchurch area from the 1600s to the 1800s at least; this persistance of family names shows that any move could have been well before the C17th)
