      His death was reported in the "Exeter Flying Post" of Thursday 11 December 1823:
      "On Tuesday, the 25th ult. Mr. Matthew Spurrell, of Clowance-street, aged 69."
      Matthew would have known where he lived as in "Plymouth Dock" rather than Devonport, but the name Devonport was probably familiar to him. It was in the year of his death the king was petitioned that the name be changed to Devonport - and agreed
