Gender Male Occupation 1752 Buckland Abbey, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England Gardener - The Plymouth Municipal records include the Town Steward Joseph Collier's Account Book. In this in Nov. 1752 is an entry "for trees planted at cost of town on and near the late Horsepool". It notes that "Solomon Northmore Sir Francis Drake's Gardener looked after the planting". (cited by Northmore Newsletter, Issue 9, September 1993, p.127)
I'm sure that the Solomon must have been this one - he seems to have been the first after whom all the others were named, directly or indirectly.
The Sir Francis Henry Drake mentioned must have been the fifth baronet, 1722 - 1794, since the fourth died in 1739/40. The fifth baronet was baptised, like Solomon, in Meavy, though about 11 years later, too big an age gap to make it likely they played together as boys. Also, this Drake pedigree (see no. 68 for the fifth baronet) suggests the Drakes were residing at Buckland soon after the 5th baronet's birth.
(For the above Plymouth planting it is also recorded that Thomas Northmore and his sons levelled the ground, and that there were sixty elms from Lophill. I think the Thomas Northmore must have been Solomon's brother of that name. I suspect 'Lophill' was Lopwell, just down the road from Buckland Abbey).
