Sarah Ann SPURRELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Sarah Ann SPURRELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 26 Sep 1838 Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
- DOB from gravestone, place from censuses
GRO ref: SPURRELL, Female q4 1838 Tavistock RD 9 445; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Willcock
Baptised 11 Nov 1838 St. Mary’s Church, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 28 Aug 2011):
(under 1838) "Novr. 11 Sarah Ann daughter of Thomas & Sarah Spurrell, abode: Hall, occupation: yeoman, ceremony performed by C. C. Christie"
Gender Female Residence From 1841 to 1861 Hall Farm, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
- 1841: with her parents and siblings - the whole family from her parents to 2 2 year old Sarah Ann were bracketed together and shown as "Farmer". Aged just 2, it is doubtful Sarah was contributing in any worthwhile way to the work of the farm and household!
His maternal grandparents and uncle were a separate household in the same building.
Aged 12 in 1851 the "occupation" field on the census was left blank for Sarah so it is not clear if she was attending school and / or helping on the farm.
Occupation 1861 Hall Farm, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
Farmer's Daughter (probably dairy work etc.) - In 1861 she was shown as "Farmers Daughter" - implying she was doing dairy work and similar - it was not an automatic designation for any daughters of a farmer (her sister Jane was shown as dressmaker). A farmer's daughter might also help with the chickens, the young animals, taking products to the local market etc.
Occupation 1871 Maristow Mansion, Tamerton Foliot, Devon, England
Dairy Maid - Age shown as 28 which is a bit inaccurate, but birthplace as "Sandford Spiney, Devon" and I have found no other Sarahs born anywhere around this time, let alone in Sampford Spiney.
Only servants present in the house at the time of the census (housekeeper and 2 laundry maids besides Sarah - others may have been away with the family) so it is not clear for whom she was working.
Occupation 1881 Parkers Well House, Exeter, Devon, England
Cook - To draper William Brock and his household: William, his wife and 6 children, one of 5 live-in servants so Sarah would have been cooking for at least 13 people each day.
Occupation 1891 21, New Cavendish Street, Marylebone, London, England
Housekeeper - By 1891 Sarah had left Devon and was in London.
She was housekeeper to dental surgeon Gordon Hooper. With the only other live-in servant appearing to be a footman, she was probably still responsible for getting meals amongst others jobs.
Sarah may not have taken to life "in the smoke" - by 1901 she had returned to Devon.
Occupation 1901 Okewood, Littleham, Exmouth, Devon, England
Housekeeper - Still a housekeeper, now with a parlour maid to help with the domestic duties, working for a retired Major General of the Madras Army, 66 year old widower Thomas Obbard.
Died 13 Jan 1919 Elm Villa, Horrabridge, Devon, England
- Date from Probate index; according to Dartmoor Press gravestone shows 12th. Address assuming Sarah died at home (also from probate index)
Probate. 14 May 1919 London, England
