Gender Male Occupation From 1841 to 1851 Heckwood, Whitchurch, Devon, England Farmer - In 1851 shown as farmer of 13 acres, employing 4 labourers. Four labourers seems a lot for 13 acres, especially considering that the adjacent entries (for Hecklake and Heckwood) were each for farmers with 30 acres, but neither of whom are shown as employing any labourers, and one was also a stone mason.
The Whitchurch tithe commutation information should give more information about the land that Joseph was farming. Given that Joseph and his family were shown as being at Heckwood in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses, it is surprising to see that the information from the tithes (on the FODA website). dated 1843, shows Joseph as occupier of 56 acres at Vixen Tor, owned by Mary Ann Windeat, while she was both owner and occupier of another 154 acres, 149 of which was described as Heckwood or "part of Heckwood".
Perhaps the large no. of labourers is explained by Joseph farming 13 acres in his own right but being employed by Mary Ann Windeat to farm the rest of the land she owned for her.
In 1841 an ag lab rather than a farmer was living at Vixen Tor.
