Notes - The Pidsley / Pidsleigh Family
Joan became a Pidsley by marriage and my interest is really only in her descendants, my Pidsley cousins.
Unlike most of my ancestors and relations (or at least the ones I know of) they were gentry at least into the C18th, possibly the C19th and so adding a bit of variety and so interest to my tree.
Some remained in Bishopsteignton and those are the ones I know of so far. But after Charles (bapt 1670) had his family there (seven children baptised 1707-1722) there seem to be no more baptisms, at least to 1792, although a couple of spinster Pidsleys married in 1761 and 1771, and an Ann (b c.1744) and an Edward (b. c. 1750), a couple, were buried there in the 1820s. A book written in 1822 in its description of Bishops Teignton mentions "Wear, in this parish, is the property and residence of Mr. Edward Pidsley"; there are earlier references to Weare / Ware as the Pidsley family home so it seems probable that Edward was a grandson of Charles.
Although it would make them older than usual for a marriage, Edward and Ann may well have been the couple with these Christian names who married at St Thomas's Church, Exeter on 22 June 1802, Ann having the surname Bracegirdle at the time of the marriage (from DFHS index of PR entries).
In addition a Simon Pidsley became curate of Bishopsteignton in 1796. Was this coincidence or was he a descendant of the above Charles? Alumni Oxienses shows he was the son of William and an online tree (mainly about the Jacob family) agrees and shows William as the son of John. Was this Charles' son John? - the date is appropriate. However, Simon's name and subsequent links with Crediton suggest he may have been closely related to the Simon of Crediton who left a will c. 1745 (only survives as a list item). The 1753 Freeholders list shows a John in Bishopsteignton but there was also a John as well as a Simon in Colebrook near Crediton; it could be that John rather than the Bishopsteignton one who was the father of William.
The website with this family shows grandfather John as having died in 1801. There seems to have been a John of Crediton who died in 1801 (a copy of his will survives at the DRO) but also a John of Kingsteignton who left a will, proved in the PCC in 1802. I have a copy of the latter and at a glance I can see that John of Kingsteignton was a Merchant, married to Maria. He refers to the Rev. Simon Pidsley, and it is probably not the will of an elderly John as I also spotted references to his children being aged under 21 when he wrote it (31 May 1801). It is a long will and I have yet to read all through it. It will be interesting to see what both wills say - or if they are actually the same will, of a John with property in both parishes.
At present I show 2 separate Johns who may be one - John Simon's grandfather (unlinked to rest of main tree) and John son of Charles (who is linked).
Co-incidentally one of Simon's daughters married one Dr George Andrew Jacob DD. He was the grandson of Edward Jacob FSA of Faversham; I was looking at Edward Jacobs book about Faversham only a couple of months before finding my link to the Pidsleys (my interest in Faversham also being due to family history).
