Set As Default Person -
Name Samuel NORTHMORE Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Mar Q 1872 Millom, Cumberland, England
- From the 1881 census where shown as aged 9
GRO ref: NORTHMORE, Samuel q1 1872 Bootle RD 10b 613; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Bennett
Gender Male Hobby / Interest Abt 1890 Rugby - Several rugby teams were formed in Millom in the early 1890s. In 1885 two amalgamated to form the Millom Rugby Football Club. They enjoyed a great deal of success and became known as Millom the Mighty. In their first thirteen years they won the Cumberland RU Cup three times, the North-Western League championship four times and were runners up three times, and 29 players gained Cumberland County honours, three represented the North against the South and two gained international caps.
Of these two one was Sam Northmore, capped for England in 1896. As a youth he had captained Millom's "A" team and led them through a season without a single defeat. He was later capped many times for Cumberland.
His brother-in-law Joe Young was also a memorable player for Millom.
(from newspaper article included in Northmore Newsletter 6, March 1992; newspaper article entitled "Millom the Mighty Started in a Wash-House!" but name of newspaper and date unknown; the article was prompted by a Mr R. Northmore of Askern, near Doncaster, son of Sam, asking for information. The Newsletter editor, Mrs Doreen M. Heaton, described the cutting as having been sent to her "many years ago"; she also confirms that the Samuel who was the rugby player was the son of Walter)

Samuel was living here with his 2nd wife, 6 children (4 from his first marriage, 2 from his second) and a step-daughter. (Shown as daughter but listed after the rest; I think if she had been a daughter of Samuel and Annie born before they married she would probably have been listed before May.

(both brides on the page were Elizabeth, but as Samuel and family were with his father-in-law's family at the time of the 1901 census it is clear which he married)
The figures against Samuel for children born alive and still living in the 1911 census (6 and 6, with a dash for those who had died) erroneously entered imply all the children born to Samuel and this Elizabeth were then still living.

According to Northmore Newsletter 6, Samuel moved to Co. Durham and had 12 children with his 2nd wife, some of whom moved to the Doncaster area.
I can only find 10; maybe the 12 was an approximate no., or 1 or 2 are missing due to mis-transcriptions in the index; maybe the illegitimate Dorothy was included, and / or 1 or 2 were still-born.
I have assumed all the Northmores with a mother's maiden name of Ireland are this couple, apart from a mysterious Raymond born in Devon (poss St Thomas RD, i.e. Exeter; not the area Samuel came from) in 1913. This seems too soon after the 1912 registration to be another child of theirs, but the birth is in an unusally large gap.
While mother's maiden names were only included from the 3rd q of 1911, the census shows that by then Samuel and Annie had only had 2 children and both were still living.
