William WILLIAMS
Set As Default Person -
Name William WILLIAMS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1837 Walkhampton, Devon, England
- Shown as aged 22 when he married Cecilia; birthplace from the 1861 census
Baptised 18 Jun 1837 Walkhampton Church, Walkhampton, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 27 Jun 2015)
Gender Male Occupation 1861 Meavy, Devon, England
Ag labourer Occupation 1864 Stoke Damerel, Devon, England
Farmer - When his son William was baptised
Occupation From 1866 to 1869 Keyham, Devonport, Devon, England
Dairyman - Shown as at Keyham when his son Arthur was baptised, at Stoke when sons Richard and Richard Jonas were baptised. But Keyham was in Stoke [Damerel] parish so this does not necessarily imply a move or mistake, just less precision.
When son Richard was buried between the 2 baptisms of Richards his abode was given as Ford, which is very close to Keyham, so the family were probably still in that part of the parish.
Occupation From 1871 to 1908 Urgles, Goodameavy, Meavy, Devon, England
Farmer - Farmer of 36 acres (acreage shown in 1871 and 1881 censuses only)
Shown as farmer at Urgles in the 1871 - 1901 censuses, and given that his widow had taken over the role following his death (shown in the 1911 census) it seems reasonable to suppose William continued as farmer at Urgles until his death.
William appears to have taken over from his parents at Urgles. An 1857 directory shows a James Williams as the farmer at 'Hurgles' in Meavy (and the censuses and baptism record confirm that William's father was called James). His mother was Mellin, and the probate calendar shows that she died in 1870; it was probably following her death that William and his family took over there.
Two sons were shown with their occupation as "farmers son" in the 1891 census - Richard and Mark. His wife and daughter are not shown as having any occupation but no doubt assited with at least dairy work, and probably other work on the farm, as well as the housework.
(Arthur was still living at home but was a china clay labourer).
By 1901 the only son to remain at home was Mark, and again shown as "farmers son" for occupation. Mary was still (or again?) living at home, with her daughter, although the women again were not shown as having an occupation.
Died 21 May 1908 - Date from gravestone inscription:

James and Mellan were both buried in Walkhampton though living in Meavy parish (and near the Bickleigh border, the opposite side from the part of Meavy bordering Walkhampton). I guess this was to be in an area of family graves. Possibly they had children buried in Walkhampton when they were living there (I haven't tried to check), or James' parents and wider family may all have been buried there (although he was born in Cornwall Williams was a particularly common name in Walkhampton and it would not suprise me if his family weren't from there, and had simply lived for a while in Cornwall).
