Name Prudence PALMER Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 25 Dec 1809 St. Andrew’s Church, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England
- From Dartmoor Press info
Shows Prudence Palmer as d of Oliver and Prudence
Gender Female Apprenticeship From 30 Mar 1820 to 8 Jul 1824 Burriford(?), Lamerton, Devon, England
- The overseers of Lamerton Parish arranged for Prudence to become a Parish Apprentice. On 30 March 1820, at the age of 10, she was apprenticed to Richard Collins, yeoman of Burriford(?) in Lamerton Parish.
Although the intention at the outset was that Prudence was apprenticed until her 21st birthday, for some reason she was discharged on 8 July 1824.
Residence From 1833 to 1835 Ottery, Lamerton, Devon, England
- When her son John was baptised and buried, and when her husband was buried.
Residence From 1841 to 1864 Rushford, Lamerton, Devon, England
- Aged about 31 (though rounded down age given as 25) and a childless widow Prudence was living in the house of mason William Doidge and his wife and daughter Honour by the time of the 1841 census. I thought she might have been a domestic servant she was still with them at the time of the 1851 census when shown as a lodger rather than a servant. Surprisingly no occupation was given on either occasion. Maybe some ill health prevented her working. In 1851 Honour was shown as a seamstress.
By 1861 William and his wife were dead, but Prudence was still with Honour at Rushford. Now Honour was shown as a tailoress, Prudence as a seamstress.
Died Jun Q 1864 Tavistock Reg Dist, Devon or Cornwall, England
- GRO ref: Cornelius, Prudence q2 1864 Tavistock RD 5b 258
Buried 27 Apr 1864 St. Peter’s Church, Lamerton, Devon, England

Family Samuel CORNELIUS, b. Abt 1804, d. Yes, date unknown (Age ~ 31 years) Married 14 Oct 1829 St. Andrew’s Church, Plymouth, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed May 2013)
Samuel Cornelius and Prudence Palmer, both of the parish, married by banns, by John Hatchard, Vicar. Samuel and Prudence made their marks; witnesses Wm Worthley and James Boulter both signed.
I believe the marriage was this Prudence because the censuses show a Prudence Cornelius resident in Lamerton (1841-1861), born Buckland Monachorum, shown as a widow in 1851 and 1861. The only discrepancy is that Prudence regularly gives an age consistent with a birth in 1812/3 rather than 1809.
No children with Prudence on any census; any born after Samuel and Prudence married would be under 12 at the time of the 1841 census, but could have died in infancy OR been parish apprentices in 1841, but there are no others in Lamerton PRs, nor in any other transcriptions on FMP (as at 9 Apr 2014 - covers the CoE Parishes in the Plymouth area, where Samuel and Prudence married).
Samuel was probably also a parish apprentice like Prudence (given that his sister was born in the Poor House); although a few years older than her he would probably have been an apprentice until the age of 21 i.e. until 1825. With Prudence having been an apprentice from 1820 it could have been this that led them to meet, if they were on the same or neighbouring farms.
