Gender Male Military Service From 15 Oct 1850 to 31 Jan 1858 Royal Marine - A James Stansbury joined the Marines in Plymouth on 15 October 1850. He gave his age as 19, and birthplace as Buckland Monachorum. Both the date of his baptism and the age given in the census suggest that this James would probably only have been 16 or 17 at this time. Judging from the 1841 and 1851 censuses there was only the one Stan(s)bury family in Buckland Monachorum at this time - his father had moved to the village from Sourton, near Okehampton. And I have not found any evidence of James from Buckland Monachorum anywhere else after the 1841 census, just the 1851 census for the Marine Barracks.
Hence, despite the age discrepancy, I do believe the James who joined the Marines was this one.
The Attestation Paper shows that James enlisted for a Bounty of £3.17.6, and was willing to serve for 12 years. Unfortunately he was to serve for just a little over 7.
A few months enlisting, at the time of the 1851 census he was a Private in the Marine Barracks in East Stonehouse. Subsequently he was to serve on H.M.S. Sappho; presumably he was aboard her when she left Portsmouth in March 1856 with a crew of about 140 under the command of Commander Fairfax Moresby. She was to be part of a British squadron patrolling the coast of West Africa to suppress the slave trade.
Possibly unlawfully Sappho seized the American barque Panchita at Porto de Lenha on the Congo river in May 1857. Legally, Sappho intercepted a schooner preparing to board slaves on 10 September and burned her. Just 8 days later Sappho engaged a much larger slaver and drove it ashore. Sadly about 150 slaves were drowned, but in the region of 380 were rescued, and prize money was awarded to the crew of the Sappho.
The contentious diplomatic incident concerning the Panchita led to Commander Moresby being censured; Sappho was ordered to sail to the Australian Station. She left from the Cape of Good Hope on 8 January 1858, but never arrived at Sydney. She was last sighted at the western entrance to Bass Strait on 18 February. There are a few theories and also colourful rumours concerning her disappearance. Most likely is that she capsized during gales that lashed Bass Strait on the days immediately after she was last seen. Naval brigs such as Sappho were unstable due to the combination of fine hull-lines, heavy armament and high sail area.
