Was he the son of John by a previous marriage, or was he registered as a Ashton although John and Mary Ann had not married by then (possibly because John had joined the navy and gone to sea)?
The GRO online index shows his mother's maiden name as Vogwill, suggesting that Mary Ann was his mother.
Mary Ann's brother Henry had a son born in Sydenham Damerel in 1843, so if Samuel was her child it could be why he was born there - with his father at sea, she went to stay with her brother and his family for the birth.
Not listed by Marian Warriner as a child of Mary Ann - maybe because he wasn't, or did he stay in England or die before the family emigrated? A Samuel did die in Torrington RD in 1852, but the name was not uncommon in the area.
