  • Name Philip NEWMAN
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1684
    • From date of his first marriage. No baptism found, looking for a Phil(l)ip Newman born at any time in Arundel,
    Gender Male
Residence Bef 1734  Farnham, Surrey, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • At an unknown earlier time, but which must have been before 1734, Philip was 'of Farnham' (according to a 1744 conveyance of property which refers to him)
Residence From 1734 to 1743  Arundel, Sussex, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Philip appears to have been of Arundel by 1734 when he and his wife mortgaged a property in the town, and in 1735 a Court of Chancery case involved a Philip Newman of Arundel. Still of Arundel when he died.
Property 15 Mar 1733/34  Old Brewhouse, Tarrant Street, Arundel, Sussex, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • A conveyance of 1744 shows that Philip and his wife had mortgaged the whole of the Old Brewhouse to Henry Caplin for £500.
    Will 1743
    • An old register of wills shows that the will of a Philip Newman of Arundell, Sussex was proved in the Consistory Court of the Bishop of Chichester; the register has the date 1743 - it is not clear if this was when the will was written or proved.

I hope to see this will.
    Occupation Malster
    Died Abt 1743
    • A lease of 1744 show Philip as deceased, and that his widow had remarried to Henry Tapner. Since this remarriage took place on 22 Jan 1743/4 he must have died before then, but after he himself had married Grace on 3 Oct 1742.

Family 1 Sarah STANDLY,   d. Yes, date unknown

    • From PR entry (image on Ancestry, viewed 28 Aug 2015)
"[June] 23 Philip Newman & Sarah Standly of Farnham" - under heading '1712 Married'

Childrens baptisms in Farnham, images on Ancestry, viewed 28 Aug 2015.
Not found burial of Sarah in Farnham or Arundel, looked (using Ancestry index for Farnham and SFHG for Arundel) 1715 - 1742
Big jump in date to baptism of 2nd John - was he a son of the same Philip? Death of first John and lack of any other evidence of another Philip in Farnham suggests he probably was, though there were other Newman families in Farnham so the wrong Christian name for the father could have been recorded.
I looked through images 1715-1728 in case the index missed any children of Philip, all quite clear and found no more.

(Original data: Anglican Parish Registers. Woking, Surrey, England: Surrey History Centre; ref for the above baptisms FA/1/2).
