Carter - Aged 20 George was carter on the farm of John Whiteway, and living in with John's family rather than with his own. The farm was 210 acres, and employed 3 labourers and 4 boys. Not all were living in; as well as a 16 year old plough boy was 71 year old Samuel Stonelake, relationship to family of servant, but whose occupation was shown simply as "general usefull"!

- Aged 29, shown as married but the only other person in the house was 30 year old Louisa Effer, unmarried!
Occupation 1871 Labourer - Possibly means farm labourer, as shown as retired farm labourer in 1911
Miscellaneous 1901 - Shown in the census as in receipt of "parish pay" - presumably either ill health had forced him to retire though only aged 60 or he couldn't find work.

Only 3 people shown for this page, and searches for the whole quarter in Totnes RD etc. haven't found Henry. He appears to be missing from the index on FreeBMD, possibly was on a bit of a page or a page that has rotted away.

Family Louisa EFFER, b. Abt 1842, Torquay, Devon, England
, d. Yes, date unknown Married Jun Q 1888 Totnes Reg Dist, Devon, England
- GRO ref: EFFER, Louisa to FOGWELL, George Henry q2 1888 Totnes RD 5b 337
George and Louisa were together by 1871, but presumably didn't marry until 1888 because George was already married. The 1911 census shows them as having been married for 40 years; this may well imply they had lived as man and wife for 40 years, so got together around 1870/71.
They had had 3 children, all still living.
