Sarah Solly GODDEN, [Father?]
Set As Default Person -
Name Sarah Solly GODDEN Suffix [ONS gp] [Father?] Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1833 Garlinge, Margate, Kent, England
- From the 1841 and 1851 censuses where shown as aged 7 and 17, and age at marriage given as 20.
Her mother was a widow when Sarah was born, and the date of her first husband, Stephen Godden's, death means it is unclear (without an actual date of birth) whether Sarah could have been his child. If she had had her 20th birthday by the time she married she could have been, the marriage being just under 20 years and almost 9 months from the death. However, the lack of a father's name in the baptism register suggests she was not Stephen's daughter.
At marriage Edward Cherison is named as her father. Sometimes the name of a father for a person born illegitimate seems to be a person created for respectability, but in this case the fact Sarah was recorded in the PR as a GODDEN and a spinster while her father's surname was given as CHERISON indicates this was not the reason. Do does it mean Edward was her biological father? I'm not sure. It was a couple of years after Sarah's birth that he married her mother. I think the longer the gap the more likely a child was not the biological child of their mother's husband, though I have a longer gap (c. 3 years, where both were free to marry) where the man claimed the child his wife had before marriage as his natural child by her. Children / step-children often took their father (or step-father's) surname after their mother married him or the two started living as a couple. But in this case Sarah did not, which suggests to me it is less likely Edward was her father, although this appears to have been her parents choice (it was not just at marriage that Sarah was recorded as a Godden in the 1841 census, when Edward was living, and with his wife and her children, and in 1851, after Edward had died). The person with the 3 year gap between her birth and parent's marriage was not consistently referred to by her father's name after her parent's marriage, so I don't think it safe to say the fact Sarah did not become Sarah CHERISON indicates she was not Edward's child. Overall, the fact she named him as her father, without it creating respectability, and given she was only about 12 when he died, so probably played quite a limited part in her life, suggests to me he probably was her father.
