  • Name Richard SMITH
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Between 1575 and 1595
    • Estimate between 1575 and 1595 , probably c. 1580, based on his parents marriage and when his known children were baptised, and on his mother's age as given in the Court of Chancery proceedings - and allowing for this being out by a few years.
The Court of Chancery case shows that Richard was the son of John and Margery.

James unkind to his brother and step-mother?
Transcription of the complaints brought against James in the equity Court of Chancery by his step-mother and half-brother. Unfortunately, James' reply is not with the bill, and I haven't found, so we don't have his side of the story which might well cast a different light on matters.

    • Date not certain: year and day legible, month not clear.

Chancery Court case of 1618 mentions "by his deed bearinge date the last day of February in the Twentyeth yere of the Raigne of our late soveraigne Ladye Queene Elizabeth in consideracon of the intermaryage betwixt him & the said Margery" and "itt ys now full fortye yeares sythens the said Convayance was made" [it is now full forty years since the said Conveyance was made]
Both these agree in making the date of the arrangement about 1578; the former reference gives the precise date of 28 Feb 1577/78.

    Family Mary,   b. Est 1597,   d. Aft 1674  (Age ~ 78 years)
    Married Est 1619
    • Estimate based on first known child, but with some entries in the PRs at this time illegible there could have been more children and an earlier marriage.

A Richard Smith married a Marie Waldrope in St Saviours Dartmouth in October 1619. A very convenient fit, a year before the first child I know of was baptised in Charleton - but is it the right one? Have I struck lucky or with names like Richard Smith and Mary was I bound to find one to 'fit'?
Googling tells me it was just chance.
In 1620 there was a visitation of armigerous families. Included is one small tree of Smith in Dartmouth. This has Richard and his wife, and shows his father was also living in 1620, and was 'of Dartmouth'. It doesn't fit as this Richard and his father. (see a printed version online)
