    Overseer - neglected duty 
    • In 1756 John Rixon was Overseer of the Poor for the Parish of St. Mildred's in Canterbury. One of his duties was collecting the rate which the overseers needed to fund the care of the poor.
      It appears that on 22 April he was indicted for neglecting this, at a meeting of the Justices of the Canterbury Court of Quarter Sessions, and the matter was "Adjourned to Monday 26th April at 10 a.m.".
      John duly appeared before the court, pleaded guilty and was fined six shillings and eight pence (which he paid in court).
