Basil TERRY
Set As Default Person -
Name Basil TERRY Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1620 - Although I haven't found his baptism, I am guessing that Basil was the son of Thomas and Maria, named after her father. I do know that Thomas had a son Basil as he mentions him in his will.
Gender Male Bequest 1653 In the will of his father Will 7 Dec 1703 Written Buried 28 Jun 1704 St. Mary’s Church, Brabourne, Kent, England
[1] - There were burials of Basil TERRYs in Brabourne in 1688/9, 1704 and 1713.
I am guessing that this is the one referred to as 'senior' and his son one referred to as 'junior' but who was the one of Postling? And 'senior' was buried after 'junior'; would the term still have been used to distinguish him from his son after the latter's death, or was it to distinguish him from another still living - possibly the Postling one?
(there are no Terry (Turrie, etc.) bapt, marriages or burials recorded in Postling, judging by the KFHS transcripts)
Was the Postling Basil the one who was of Minster in Sheppey when he married aged 20 in 1684 (i15224)? Doesn't seem very likely, esp as a Thomas Terry bonded who was also shown as of Minster. (Postling is near Waltham and Brabourne, not near Sheppey)
I think it probable that the name Basil was introduced to the TERRY family by the marriage of Maria BECON to Thomas TERRY, so the Basils are most likely descendants of theirs, or at least close relations. A child was often named after a godparent, and godparents were (and are) often relations - so the name could easily have spread to other TERRYs not descended from Thomas and Maria.
