Gender Male Military Service World War One - Royal Field Artillery - It appears that Stephen was a Sergeant in the Royal Field Artillery.
I am fairly confident that he is the S. Northmore recorded on the Roll of Honour in Ugborough Church, which shows all from the parish who served, not just those who died or were invalided.
Ugborough appears at first glance to have got off lightly; out of 90 who served in the army, only 3 died and a further 7 were invalided.
There was a higher death rate amonst those who served in the navy, 4 out of 60 died, with 2 invalided.
However, on closer inspection it is clear that the Roll of Honour only covers 1915 and 1916; others, some on the Roll and some who presumably joined up later, also died so the total from WW1 on the war memorial is not 7 but 24.
Whilst not many may have been recorded as invalided, the effects of serving and the memories no doubt affected the lives of many more.

Notes - With parents at time of 1891 and 1901 censuses
- (Research):I believe Stephen was the S Northmore in the RFA as there appears to have only been the one Northmore family at the time, that of Stephen, his parents and siblings.
A Thomas Henry and his family also lived in Ugborough in the early C20th but not only did he probably move to the parish after WW1 but he had no son with a name beginning S, and his children were in any case too young to have served.
