William TUCKERMAN
Set As Default Person -
Name William TUCKERMAN Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1564 - Date from age given in 1586 manor survey.
Whilts I am not certain that Robert was the father of William, it seems probable because:
1. William gave the name Robert to his first son,
2. William gave the name Sisley, probably the name of Robert senior's widow, to his first daughter.
3. William was listed immediately after Robert in the 1586 manor survey.
4. The ages in the manor survey (50 for Robert, 22 for William) are appropriate for father and son.
Further evidence in favour is that Robert was shown as of West Hartley when he was buried; a William, probably the one who was father of Sisley (the one who married Ralfe Crobierd), i.e. the one I show as Robert's son, was shown as of Hartley in the PR entry for his burial.
Gender Male Tax 1592 Blackawton, Devon, England
Military rate - William was liable to provide 'a sher hoek a Callr ps' (a shear hook and a caliver piece)
(from the military rate held at the DHC, ref. 3799M/3/O/4/50, p. 38-41, cited in Gray, Todd 2016 Devon Parish Taxpayers, vol. 2, p. 91)
A shear-hook was a nautical weapon, a sickle-shaped hook intended to destroy the enemy's rigging (OED entry).
A caliver was a ight kind of musket or harquebus (OED entry).
Residence 1617 Hartley, Blackawton, Devon, England
- At the time of his death.
Occupation Farmer - A survey of 1586 of lands and possessions of Edward, Earl of Bedford, in Devon, relating to the manor of Blackawton (part of SP 13/GG/5) lists the free tenants, conventionary tenants and customary tenants. Amongst the latter, i.e. tenants who held their land through the manor's customs, were Robert Tokerman (50) and William Tokerman (22).
(cited in Gray, Todd 2016 Devon Parish Taxpayers, vol. 2, p. 91)
In 1597 there was a church rate to raise money to repair the church, made and agreed upon by the parishioners. This shows that William held more land than most, three farlings, for which he was liable to pay 'three bushells of Oates, a busshell & a half of wheate & three pecks of Barly or 20s [£1]'
(from the church rate held at the DHC, cited in Gray, Todd 2016 Devon Parish Taxpayers, vol. 2, p. 96)
The area represented by the term 'farling' is not entirely clear, The description on the 'Old Cornish units of measurement' page on Wikipedia gves some idea, it may have been 30 acres - or just under half of this. With three farlings William probably had between 40 and 90 acres.
A bushel was 8 gallons, a peck 2 gallons so if he paid in grain William was to supply 24 gallons of oats, 12 gallons of wheat and 6 gallons of barley.

Married - ** I do not have any evidence that Sisley was married to Robert, or that either was a parent of William **
It is the exitence of people with these names (from the burial records) and the names William gave his children that leads me to suspect a link.
