George KNOWLING
Set As Default Person -
Name George KNOWLING Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 17 Feb 1654/55 St. Mary Major Church, Exeter, Devon, England
- The baptism was recorded in the Register of St. Petrock's Church, but with a note that the baptism had taken place at "St Mary's More".
I wouldn't have been sure which of the 3 churches in Exeter this was, but the baptism is also recorded in the register of St. Mary Major.
Gender Male Bequest 1676 Residual Beneficiary and Executor - George was left specific bequests but was also the residual beneficiary as well as being made executor of his father's will. He reached the age of 21 about the time the will was proved, and so seems to have been the sole executor. Writing his will nearly two years earlier his father had made provision for two others to act as executor during his minority.
Militia Assessment 1715 Blackawton, Devon, England
- A "Mr Georg Knowling" was included in this assessment, assessed for £18 in one fifty. Although this George was merchant of Exeter I think it was him.
Unusually, although this was not the largest assessment in the fifty (a Mr William Sparke was assessed for £26), George was listed first, implying it was up to him to find and pay the militiaman. I guess it would have engaged others to do this for him - maybe he would have asked Richard Bartlett, widower of his 1st cousin English.
His link to the area (though Dartmouth rather than Blackawton) mean it would not be surprising for him to have property / land in the parish. In addition, his aunt's marriage is the only Knowling event I know of in Blackawton, so there is no other obvious George Knowling who might have been assessed for property in Blackawton.

Married Bef 1697 - There was a marriage of a 'George Nowling' to a 'Sara Dave' in Bideford in 1692; it seems unlikely this George would have married there but worth investigating further. (So far only seen details as in Boyd's marriage index).
Married to Sarah by the time of a lease dated 21 Oct 1697.
A number of trees on Ancestry have this George married to a Jane Scut (with a son born 1716), but no information about where the marriage took place or what makes them believe it was this George. As I can find no sign of Jane in Exeter, and as the son of George and Jane on the Ancestry trees is shown as born in Chagford I am doubtful about this.
Especially now I have found the lease this George had in 1697 (described as merchant of Exeter, and mother as Joanna, plus his father had it before him) which names his wife as Sarah.
