John HEXT
Set As Default Person -
Name John HEXT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1590 Stokenham, Devon, England
- (assumed from baptism)
Baptised 1 Jul 1590 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England
Gender Male Church Office 1630 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England
Parish Clerk - Parish Clerks were appointed by the priest, and it was an office for life, unlike Churchwardens, overseers etc. who were elected annually.
John was recorded as Parish Clerk ('Clerk. p[ar]ochi:' when his daughter Alice was baptised in 1630. He might have been expected to continue as such until his death which I believe occured in 1662, but given the changes that had happened to the church during the Interregnum his time would presumably at least have been interrupted.Because his responsibilities included leading the responses in services, it implies he was able to read.
Died Abt Mar 1662 Stokenham, Devon, England
- (assumed from burial)
Buried 3 Apr 1662 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England
Siblings1 sister Patriarch & Matriarch
William HEXT, b. Est 1555, d. Yes, date unknown (Father)
Notes - (Research):Hexts in Stokenham:
During the time my Hext ancestors are known to have been living in Stokenham* the majoirty of Hext events (baptism, marriage and burial) appear to be members of their close family. There are just a few where I don't know of a connection:
Jone - bap 13 Aug 1590, daughter of James - maybe James was a brother of my ancestor William
Ishath Hext (bride) mar Custener Jeffery - Feb 1662
Thomas's bur 1675 and 1698 - one must be John's son, but who was the other?
Nicholas marr Elizabeth Wills 11 Nov 1722
They had children John (bap 25 Aug 1724), Mary (bapt 30 Jun 1728)
(up to 1755, using FMP index, searched on Hext and Hept and variants of both)
Wife Eliz d 1756, dau Mary marr 1756, John bur ? or moved away?
Nich d bur 1768
A Jane of East Portlemouth married William Bastard of Stokenham in 1773 - was she related to the Stokenham Hext's? The William she married had a mother who as a Hext (Elizabeth, my direct ancestor).
Another Jane was buried in Stokenham earlier in 1773 - link unknown.
* - since the PRs take us back to a William probably born around 1555, i.e. around the earliest we can find using PRs, there may well have been Hexts there for much longer.
