Simon PEPPERELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Simon PEPPERELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 26 Oct 1823 St. James’ Church, Slapton, Devon, England
Gender Male Occupation 1851 Collapit, West Alvington, Devon, England
House servant - At the time of the 1851 census Simon was one of 4 house servants at Collapit, in the home of William and Mary Adams. This seems a large number, considering that William was only a farmer of 80 acres employing one labourer. Just one of the servants was female, the 3 other than Simon being teenagers.
With William and Mary were 2 visitors, it's possible that one or more servants were theirs.
Or, given that both William and Mary were aged 70, maybe one of them was disabled and needed assistance in moving around?
Residence From 1861 to 1891 The Village, West Alvington, Devon, England
- With his wife and 4 children in 1861 from his first marriage,
in 1871 with just 2 children from his first marriage,
in 1881 with 2 children from his second marriage and 3 step-children, in 1891 just the 2 youngest, the children from his second marriage remained at home.
The address was specified as Lower Street in 1871, but just the village again in 1881, with not even that much detail in 1891. In 1901 Simon's widow's address was shown again as Lower Street so this may have been where the family had lived the whole time.
Occupation From 1861 to 1881 Ag. Lab. - Recorded as ag lab or farm labourer in the census years, each time living in West Alvington village, so presumably working near there.
Residence 1871 Lower Street, West Alvington, Devon, England
- A widower, with 2 children Elizabeth and William; a lodger 34 year old sawyer, John Sarees(?) was also present.
Died Mar Q 1894 Kingsbridge Reg Dist, Devon, England
