The Rev. Francis STRODE
Set As Default Person -
Name Francis STRODE Prefix The Rev. Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1590 - From age at matriculation.
Gender Male Education 30 Oct 1607 Broadgates Hall [Pembroke College], Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England
Matriculated - Built in the 15th century, Broadgates Hall was the precursor to Pembroke College. Although 6 members of the Devonshire Strode family and 1 from Somerset were at Broadgates Hall between 1584-5 and 1617. Four of the Devonians, including Francis all matriculated on the same day: 30 Oct. 1607: William (cler. fil. aged 15), Francis (pleb., aged 17), Adam (gent, aged 18) and Arthur (cler.fil., aged 18). Despite their different social status, surely they must have been related - cousins and brothers? The other Devonians were John (cler. fil. aged 16, matric. 8 Nov 1611), shown in Alumni oxonienses as brother of the above William and another John, who matriculated at Exeter College in 1617, aged 17, but graduated B.A. from Broadgates Hall in 1621. The one from Somerset was John who matriculated on 26 Feb 1584-5, subsequently student of Middle Temple (1586). Although Broadgates Hall originally provided accommodation for law students, Arthur and William who matriculated in 1607, were the only other two shown as students of the Middle Temple.
Once Pembroke College was founded in 1624, the surviving part of Broadgates Hall has had various uses including College refectory and kitchens until 1848, when the present Hall was built, and the College Library until 1974 when it was converted for use as part of the Senior Common Room.
Occupation 10 Jan 1617/18 to 11 Jun 1623 Southrop, Gloucestershire, England
Vicar - The CCEd website suggests it was the same Francis Strode who was Vicar of Southrop before moving to Devon.
If so, where he was between 1623 and 1628 is not clear.
Occupation 16 Feb 1627/28 to 7 Nov 1639 Bishopsteignton, Devon, England
Perpetual Vicar - Perpetual vicar of Bishopsteignton with Westeingmouth Chapel
Occupation 23 May 1628 to 3 Nov 1629 Ideford, Devon, England
Rector Occupation 12 Nov 1639 to 1645 Cadeleigh, Devon, England
- How long Francis was Rector of Cadeleigh is not clear; he was still there in 1645, a successor died in 1681, but documentation of what happened between those dates has not yet been found and added to the CCEd website (as at 10 Sep 2015).
